Leighton Update

Tonight, he faced the Baby Pens (by far the best team in the AHL) in Wilkes Barre/Scranton, and by all accounts, was very sharp. Stopped 26 of 29 shots (14 of 15 in the first) in a 3-2 loss. Gave up 2 goals late to break a 1-1 tie, which you could say was from lack of conditioning. But that's why he's there.

In other news, the Phantoms dropped to 3-19-2, 10 points behind second worst in the league. Holy. Fuck.

Fun fact: Syracuse Crunch have a .409 winning percentage, 2nd worst in the league. The Phantoms are the worst at .167.

They would have gotten the L no matter what, but did you expect him to be completely dominant for a full 60 minutes in his first action since September? His conditioning is awful right now and that was clearly the biggest reason for the loss.

He played yesterday in A.C. I wanted to go but had a few fires to put out in the office. Paper said he looked sharp but they lost 4-2.

Homer said that he didn't look good at all in the 2nd game. Now Leighton says that his left leg still isn't strong and they petitioned the league to get him 2 more games down there. I know it isn't the same injury, but this sounds so much like EMery trying to rush back. I can appreciate it, but it doesn't help the team...

It probably is the same injury. The problem was a pinched never or herniated never or some fancy medical term, but from what I've heard, the nerve went to his foot, and when the nerve got damaged, he had numbness and lost strength and function in his foot. The problem was his foot, but it was located in the back.

to be honest i dont like the idea of carrying 3 goaltenders. that means someone is going to stay cold and thats not good. we'd benefit more by shipping one of boosh or leights away. im a leighton fan and think he's definitely better than boosh, but with this injury, who knows if he'll ever be 100 percent again, so i'd look to shop him around. maybe if he can work his way back to the nhl in the next few weeks, give him 2 or 3 starts, show that he can still play, then shop him around and maybe ship him to a team in need of a backup or something, and get a pick in return.

Even Leighton admits that the numbness in his foot may never go away. I assume he can learn to deal with it. BUt who knows... Emery had a necrotic hip joint, which is much more serious than Leighton's injury, but it could end up being just as bad for him here.

IMO leighton should just be sent down.. at this point boosh and bob are doing fine.. bob has looked great, and over the past 5 games, boosh has looked better (4-0-1 with a 1.71 and a .951).. if i'm in charge, leighton is the one that chills in the minors.. if/when he gets called up due to injury or whatever, even at 750k on the way back up, i'm not sure he gets claimed

Yeah I have to agree. Both of our guys have looked fine, and Leighton does not need to be be brought up right now. Even if he will play better we might as well get 110% in the AHL.

Its a tough call especially with Boosh playing well in the back up role. I think the B's game saved his job why pay more for a back up who has trouble when he sits for too long?

at this point i'm not even calling boosh the back up.. i love bob as much as the next guy, but boosh has been the superior goalie the past month or so

Its all about upside awaz even if the two were even Boosh isn't going to get quicker at his age...at this point the skies the limit with Bob he has to be the guy unless he totally tanks which I don't see happening. He played a pretty strong game except for the gionta goal but that happens to the best of them. Look at Z's goal on price as an example. Boosh is a great backup in my books nice problem for the Flyers.

Bobrovsky was solid tonight, but he didn't make the big save when the team needed it. Subban's goal probably could have been stopped, and Gionta's goal was horrible. That's a big part of being a goalie: knowing the context of the game and stepping up when they need you the most, and I don't know that Bobrovsky has done that at all this year.

Gotta give Boucher the start on Saturday, and I'd let Leighton make his season debut against the Kittens. What better way to easy your way back into the NHL than playing an AHL team.
