I want to clinch the conference, not just the division. That probably won't be sorted out until the last game of the season.

If another team claims him the Flyers will have to pay half of his salary...about $750k. That amount would count against their cap next season.

I read a little bit ago that if he is claimed by another team that he wouldn't be able to play for them until next season.

If I'm not mistaken, the cap is prorated. If I guy makes 1 million but is in the minors for half the season, you only have a cap hit of $500k

Yes, but that'd be a stupid reason to do it. That team would take on a decent cap hit just to prevent the Flyers - a team they don't even know they are playing, since seeding is still up in the air - from having our backup goalie's backup in the playoffs? I could see somebody claiming him because they wanted to USE him, but Leighton makes too much to claim unless you have serious designs on him actually showing up on your roster. The only teams I'm worried about claiming him are those who need a backup next year, as he's a pretty good deal at $750k.

The article says that he is more likely to pass through now, as no one can use him this year. But if they wait until there is an injury and they need him, the opponent would be more likely to claim him just to block the Flyers using him. Makes sense. And we have enough cap space this year since his time on the roster is so short.

If Homer wanted him to be the third goalie why wouldn't he just wait until the playoffs started? He could have also waited until there was an injury and he wouldn't have had to pass through waivers...if I'm correct that is. It almost looks like he'd like someone to claim him but what gain would he get this year or next??? He could leave him in the AHL next year if he doesn't make the team....
