Can you retire if you've never even played.

hey he gained checks for 2 years of not playing. he turned out to be a bust but it was worth the pick. no big deal. cant wait to see a smith and lynch play together. another fix by the nfl suspending smith for 9 games.

It could just be that they are putting him on IR. They have a limited time to decide whether to put him on the 53 or to put him on IR.

Another wasted Baalke pick.

It didn't pay off, but it was a gamble pick. If it paid off, we would have had a top 5 talent fron the fourth round.

I hope they keep taking that kind of gamble.

Was he worth the risk? Yes, because his potential when healthy was on the high side. As long as the rest of that draft class was solid, you can take risks on picks like that. But it is still a wasted pick. The Niners had the extra picks to waste on a risky player, so it doesn't hurt them in the long run.

The Cardinals had a similar situation from the 2013 class that ended up being a wasted pick. Thankfully Swope was only a 6th round pick.

Not a surprise. I figured when he didn't play at all his first year, and the drafting of Hyde confirmed it, that he would never play a down in the NFL. It was a shot they took that didn't work out. No big deal

Two things here: Ian Rapoport is quoting Marcus Lattimore's agent as saying he hasn't made any decision and that there's no additional structural damage and he's healing. I suspect he's not done in the NFL.

Sounds like he is going to retire

I would have to agree. With the extension of Hunter, I think his chances of returning have become slim. As it's been well noted, it was one of the worst knee injuries any athlete can sustain. While not impossible to come back from, the odds were/are stacked highly against him. Besides at present, we have 2 healthy RB's that can't run effectively behind our starting O line...we've got bigger problems.:L

Now I know why Lattimore hasn't seen a snap yet.

If he suits up for 4 professional football games, his insurance policy is void.

So I bet he's talked the 49ers into working with him to make sure he's 100% before stepping on the field.
He doesn't want to step on the field with a bum knee and then realize he cannot play in the NFL and lose out on his insurance policy.

San Francisco 49ers' Marcus Lattimore has $1.7M disability policy - ESPN

He's got to be working with the 49ers on this.

Makes sense.

Lattimore cuts a deal with the 49ers. They agree to keep him on IR until his knee is 110%.

If his knee is never 110% he retires and collects $1.7M.

If his knee is 110% then he starts his NFL career.

It's all about dollars and sense.
