NHL viewership trends tied to hockey tradition, Northern exposure - SportsBusiness Daily | SportsBusiness Journal

ugh

An average of 3,000 homes watch Panthers games on FS Florida, and an average of 6,000 homes watch Thrashers games on FS South and SportSouth.

One head-scratcher is in Tampa, where the Lightning on the ice went into the All-Star break as the second-place team in the Eastern Conference. On Sun Sports, the team has registered a 27 percent increase to a 0.79 rating, the league's fourth-highest jump, but the Lightning's average of 14,000 homes per game is the league's fifth lowest.

Why did St. Louis get such a bump? They're as dull a team as any this year.

Ouch, San Jose -27% change. Ladies and gentlemen that is what we call the Wallin effect. Even fairweather fans know crap when they see it.

Good man to have in playoff OT though... when he becomes the NHLs luckiest secret weapon.

It's amazing to me that 5 times as many people attend the games as watch them on TV. You can pretty much see your entire fanbase at a game. Craziness.

It's a good thing the Thrashers are in the playoff hunt or those numbers would be terrible oh......Never mind :L

Pretty much seems impossible. Ratings can sometimes be a sham.

Pretty sure it has something to do with who they give the ratings boxes to.
The odds of a hockey fan getting a box were low to start with, which probably screws the results.

Not making any judgments on the viability of markets, just saying that ratings are a factor of who has a box, not actual sets tuned in.

If the % of fans are lower to start with, the odds of one of them being chosen as a ratings home are slimmer, which can skew the results.

Just a couple of extra hockey homes getting a ratings box would increase those numbers exponentially, as they extrapolate ONE ratings home into "X" number of thousands of viewers.

I agree the rating system can be flawed. The Sabres have a lot of fans just over the boarder on the Niagara region (with half a million people) that do not count for our ratings because it's a different country and most fans there do not have MSG access. A lot of these fans in Fort Erie can see the HSBC arena but their viewing doesn't count.

Good point Bizz.

This story confirms that people in Northern cities trapped in by cold and snow are more likely to view sports than those in Southern cities with access to great weather and a plethora of outdoor activities.

Good point Boss.

Miami's nearest neighbour is Cuba.
I wonder how many Cubans tune into a couple of Panthers games a week? :D

A lot of people in Buffalo and Detroit prefer to watch games on CBC over Fox or MSG. Not sure how much that affects the ratings, but I'm sure it does.

Not really surprising to see the alarming Shark's numbers... Bandwagoners are slowly dying out

Buffalonians will totally tune in to CBC over any US nationally televised broadcast, but I don't see them hitting CBC over MSG.

No Rick Jeanneret on CBC.

Surprised to not see the Rangers on the list for total # of viewers.

They may not draw the % of the other teams, but I figured the simple size of their media market would give them a better #.

I'm pretty sure I've watched hockey with thousands of people over the years without any poll knowing we were watching hockey. TV ratings are for sheeple.
