DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt senior offensive lineman Laken Tomlinson was named to the Associated Press All-America first team, according to an announcement by the organization Tuesday. Tomlinson is Duke’s first AP first team All-America honoree since Clarkston Hines in 1989 and only the seventh player in program history to be named to the AP’s top team.
Tomlinson was also named to the Athlon Sports All-America second team. Last week, he was named to the Walter Camp Foundation All-America first team and the USA Today All-America second team. Tomlinson is the first Blue Devil to receive two first team All-America honors in the same season since punter Brian Morton in 2000. Tomlinson is the first offensive player to receive two first team selections since Hines in 1989.
Tomlinson, a 6-3, 330-pound native of Chicago, Ill., has started 51 consecutive games and has helped the Blue Devils score 390 points this year, the third most in program history. Tomlinson has anchored an offensive line which leads the country in fewest tackles per game allowed with just 3.33. The unit has surrendered just 13.0 sacks, tied for the 13th fewest in the nation.
Duke is averaging 398.12 yards per game this year and is within range of having its third straight campaign averaging 400 or more yards per contest, a feat accomplished just one other time in program history, from 1987-89. This year is also the second in school history the Blue Devils have collected 20 rushing and 20 passing touchdowns, joining last year’s squad. Duke joins Florida State as the only ACC teams in the 20-20 club in 2013 and 2014.
A first team All-ACC choice in each of the last two seasons, Tomlinson has been selected to participate in the Reese’s Senior Bowl and is an Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award nominee. He was also one of 11 student-athletes named to the 2014 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
With Tomlinson’s latest All-America honors, Duke has 10 All-America selections who have earned a total of 23 All-America honors in the seven years (2008-14) under head coach David Cutcliffe. In the previous seven years of the program (2001-07), Duke had one All-American, Mike Hart, who was a Football News Honorable Mention selection at tight end in 2001.
