He stands to loose millions signing a contract as a 3rd rd pick, compared to where he would have been pick or could be picked next year. Of course if is had anything to do with it, he's going to jail and will never play a down anyway.

Interesting point made here. If you hold off contract talks, gives you some time to figure things out.

Problem with that is, if he gets drafted and it turns out he is in trouble, you just torched a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Obviously he thinks he's innocent? If that's the case, I think it's a smart move on his part. Otherwise he stands to lose millions.

True. Guess you have to rely on your 2 day investigations and roll the dice if you think the risk is worth it.

Would surprise me to see SM go this direction.

Excerpt

If Collins is drafted over the next two days he can force the issue to return to the draft next season. The way he does that is by holding out for the year. At that point the NFL will put his name back in the 2016 draft. But that requires him to be selected. There is another stipulation to consider there as well- any team that drafts him in 2015 would be ineligible to draft him in 2016. So he would need a team to be willing to take a chance on him late in this draft knowing they cant have him next year. But yes he can re-enter if this happens as stated in the CBA.

The bigger question is what happens if he is not drafted? Based on my reading of the CBA he immediately becomes an undrafted free agent. Such players do not seem to be allowed to re-enter the draft. If they were then a number of CFL or Arena players who never signed to play in the NFL would have been draft eligible. Instead they usually sign in January, taking low cost futures contracts with little or no signing bonus.

So, he is better of not getting drafted at all. He will be an undrafted free agent. I dont know if there are any rules that limit how much he can make as a undrafted free agent, but I would think not. He could demand top 10 salary and wait to see who comes calling.

Making demands/statements like this make him less draftable, not more. He should definitely fire whoever his agent is right this moment. Whoever gave him the advice, or let him follow somebody else's advice to not talk to police until after the draft, and then make a stupid ultimatum like this; is a complete incompetent agent.

First off it makes him look like a self entitled spoiled brat, it also bring into question his desire to even play football. And t makes him look like he's not confident in his own abilities. Later round players get less upfront money, but I thought they also get shorter contracts. Which means you get that first big FA contract sooner.

There ARE rules that limit how much you can pay UDFA. They were in one of the links just above you.

I disagree with you he has every right to say this no way would I want to be signed as a undrafted free agent knowing that the team will most likely have you starting

I dont pretend to know all the rule of the cba. Just going with what would be right. But with unions involved, that goes out the window. If he has nothing to do with this, I just wish him the best. I would love him in the 3rd, but not without proof his hands are clean

This guy is getting bad advice.

Had he simply talked to police & answered any questions they had, he could have cleared all this up & likely would have been drafted mid to late in the first round. For some reason, his advisers thought leaving a serious situation murky, was the right decision.

Then he tries to drop out & into the supplemental draft. When that didn't work, he tries this new approach. Which won't help either. And likely makes his situation worse for him. He can't re-enter the 16 draft unless he is drafted. He was persona non grata before this announcement. Meaning, that teams likely weren't going to touch him with a day 2 pick. Now, teams that might have been willing to take a chance on day 3, won't waste the pick knowing the guy won't sign.

Before this new announcement, if there already was a team willing to take a risk by using a day 2 pick on him, the announcement does nothing to change that. But if there wasn't a team willing to take that risk beforehand, this now basically guarantees he is going to be an UDFA.
