I would think that they would be pretty close now, but things will balance out again when OV's contract expires and they offer him a billion dollars. He won't take it, but I'm expecting the biggest poach attempt then.

I'm guessing they have tried before?

I'm sure. He did actually defect from there when he was younger, correct? Imagine what that league could become with the face of Russian hockey.

I really think that they're only a few big names away from attracting enough talent to compete with the NHL. It's been rumored that Kolchuk, Volchenkov and OV (due to the Olympic situation) were close before. If they would all leave in their primes, that league could blow up.

fact remains that the entire league is heavily subsidized.
I don't believe there is a single team even close to making payroll.

a star or three won't change the 5,000 seat arenas, or even the $10 tickets.
payroll for teams (in 2008) ranged from $55mill to $10mill.
that league is a long, long way from being a legitimate contender

truth!

this tragedy, if anything, scares North American players who were considering going to play there. You have guys playing there now, guys who used to play/coach there, and agents all right now questioning there decisions in public or saying they would disuade fellow players/clients from playing there

Lokomotiv was supposed to be the class organization of the KHL and they allowed their players to travel in a garbage can with wings

that league is all about sponsor dollars and owners with deep pockets ok with losing money because its a russian ego thing ... people arent even paying the $10 for tickets to attend games

sure Russian players may head back ... maybe the russian stars will head back ... but i dont think that will tempt north american or other euro stars from contemplating heading there

imo theres gonna be a bubble for this league

Yeah, good point. Despite the rumors of higher salaries at times, you don't have to be an economics major to know that a league predominantly in a country (U.S.) with a $14.6 trillion GDP is going to pay better than one in a country (Russia) with a GDP of $1.4 trillion. Hell, Canada's GDP alone is larger than Russia's.
