Significant is far from fully guaranteed.

That’s why I said pretty close. I agree and maybe that’s all it was, but I thought I heard he wanted fully. Maybe fake news:noidea:

When you have three years to come up with a contract the player will sign, and you fail to sign the player... its probably because you didnt want to sign the player.

It took all of three days (max) for the Redskins to negotiate a deal with Alex Smith.

Let that marinate.

OK, so let this marinate, when you have a player who won't sign at the price that you think is fair....AND...an organization that doesn't want to sign said player for what he thinks is fair, it doesn't take three years to figure out it's not going to work out. You want to keep said player and use every means to hold on to him (Tags) but the inevitable draws ever closer as you fail to recoup any sort of return for that pending loss.

I believe that as stupid as Bruce has been in this instance, he, like a whole lot of people here, was falsely holding onto hope.

For whats its worth, I had heard the same thing, and i kinda understand why. I mean look at the Oswieler deal, it looked great for the player, but when the Texans decided to bail...

I get the feeling Cousins has changed the game as far as QB contracts go. I suspect you are going to see QBs making the fully guaranteed pitch more often going forward. And as much as some will say his deal is not team friendly to the Vikings... he could have pushed for and probably gotten another 10-15M guaranteed if he would have signed a 5 year deal. Shorter contract, fully guaranteed and in three years IF he performs, he will be in a position to get a new deal instead of having to play the pay me or I will hold out game.

Bruce never wanted to sign Kirk long term for any price. He also needed a valid bail out plan that made him look like he made the smart play. Nothing more, nothing less.

Although I "liked" this I disagree that Kirk would have signed a contract once the original failed negotiation following the 2014 season happened. Believing that he would is also fair just a bit less creditable than positions taken by the few who said "never" proved to be on point, because it never happened.

Sty, 2015 is when Cousin't became the full time starter, not 2014. Cousin's made $660,000 on his rookie deal that year meaning 2015. The rumor/story is that Cousin's would have signed for much less in the middle of the 2015 season. By years end when contracts started to be the story and SM was running around saying yes we want him but we aren't going to break the bank McCarthy and Cousin's were looking for a $19 million dollar deal. Why $19 million? Because the Redskins let it be known they would tag him. The FO decided offer I believe $16 million and Cousin's refused that deal and accepted the tag.

But really the point of the post was that the FO could have had Cousin's for the same basic pay that they just gave Smith but they refused to go to the $19 million dollar figure. Now some may argue but I believe they could have had a younger and better player for the same thing they are paying Smith. The Redskins are the ones that allowed Cousin't to get the $91 million dollar contract by tagging him in back to back years while Cousin's still performed.

As I said the ship has sailed. Smith is our QB and we need to hope he can do the job. Otherwise you and I agree, the FO stinks. That is not new news. It has never been good under Snyder.

Did you miss the word "following" in my post? SM was hired in January 2015 which followed the 2014 season. The supposed pulled offer happened during the 2015 season, however there was another offer, or report of another offer prior to that one.

Report: McCloughan wanted to offer Cousins extension in 2015
https://247sports.com/nfl/washington-redskins/Bolt/Report-McClough...

In any case there are three sides of this story...

1. Kirk's which includes, playing well enough to be offered an extension/LTD.

2. The team's which included determining his worth.

3. The market which determined his floor from his perspective and more than his worth from the team's perspective.

Knowing this, once Kirk began to hold the position during the 2015 season, there was no way he was going to settle for less, nor the team going to offer him more than they believed his play warranted. Now I'm going to say this in as friendly as fashion that I can.
ANYONE, paying attention with a sober, unbiased, mindset would have instantly recognized the Irresistible force paradox that this team and Kirk Cousins found themselves in. I did, and said so in real time, while others continued to hold onto an unsupported notion that Kirk "would have" signed a "real" offer that was NEVER going to come, based on NFL market forces.

Funny thing is, too many continued to hold onto that notion despite the team's continual "low ball" offers in subsequent years. It's an easy search history to find my suggestions to trade him in 2016 and 2017, because I knew that the paradox held true. (well I actually didn't refer to the paradox, but that was my reasoning)

Missed the 2015 part I guess Sty. I know he would have signed for $19 million but the Redskins wouldn't offer it. I am not going to look anything up. I remember people here having a fit at $19 million. I think most of us knew after the 2016 season started that there wasn't going to be a contract. Who the fuck else ever let a Top 5,7, 10 QB play on the tag like Bruce and Dan did. I will answer for NO ONE!!!

Just wondering how many Redskins fans think Smith is an upgrade over Cousins? I don't know all the details but I find it bizarre Washington didn't want to keep Captain Kirk.

the stupid ones and/or racist ones who are still upset Cousins took the job away from RG3

Dean - what exactly is your agenda for starting threads like this one? Jeez - what is done is done - the Skins have Smith & Cousins is gone - nothing can undo that. We can beat this dead horse till the end of time or drag this out forever & just whine & stew non-stop.

Let's just move on. Yep - perhaps Smith is not as good as Cousins & sure maybe he will have issues. Let's just let this play out & hope for the best. And again - sure Snyder and Allen are assholes & don't know what they are doing - but complaining non-stop is not going to change that.

I just hope that they have a decent draft & don't make any terrible FA moves - we will see & again the proof comes on the field next season - not over the next few months. If this becomes too unbearable for anyone then again no problem at all if anyone wants to stop rooting for the Washington Redskins. I never will but don't blame anyone else for choosing a different path.

Till then Dean - please try to stop inciting these ridiculous debates. Thanks.
