Alvarez needs to start the season in AAA - then he needs to learn to hit offspeed pitches - then he needs to r*pe the shit out of AAA for a few months.

Bonus points if he stops eating donuts and stops acting like he's earned anything.

I think starting at AAA would be the best for him and if he doesn't put it together he might be yet another AAAA player.

Also I doubt this will set back their farm system much since they built a strong roster of Pitching prospects that can be used for trades.

The other item is that McGehee who still is not 30 and if he can go back to '09/'10 numbers is the short term replacement. With that deal I think NH was hoping to buy himself time to get the Alvarez replacement.

Not to sure I want to see McGehee at third, he is possibly worse defensively than Pedro, and we know how bad he is. What I actually wouldn't mind seeing is Navarro at third in the short term, he seems like he just gets it. That would let us bring Josh Harrison also allow Chase and Jordy to play short and third at Indy.

Tom Singer has taken over from Jen Langosch as the Pirates' writer at the "Pirates' Official Web Site" at MLB.com. I was never a Langosch fan..... and now I'm starting to wonder about Singer.

In the last paragraph of his Blog article titled "Yamaico talks - then ropes," he makes the following statement, "He (Alvarez) is a terrific defensive third baseman...".

I gotta wonder about a guy who would make that statement. His credibility took a big hit with me right there.

From what I have seen, McGehee is surprisingly competent at third base, still below average though.

agree on assessments of both.
Langosch was nice but weak. singer is eccentric and no real substance.
as burg native but not in the area, would like to get some consistent, daily, and insightful reporting, and sad that neither of them bring it.

I think Pirates fans tend to have an above average understanding of baseball. Probably because we have to in order to stay interested...
