You cannot, nor will you ever be able, to win a title when you can't score the ball. It's not rocket science. 55 ppg vs good teams is never going to get it done.

Ball control offense can work against poorly coached teams. MSU is not one of those

As I said on the game thread, this system will get you a high seed and all but good luck ever making an elite 8/final 4 playing this way

Shame we didn't see a fully healthy team. This team was clicking on all cylinders before Anderson went down. It was rather obvious he wasn't the same player. With him healthy they averaged almost 70 a game.

Virginia had a top fifteen offense before Anderson went down, and even now they are #23. That's better than Connecticut's offense last year. Sometimes bad matchups are just bad matchups. Their offense often relies on raw physicality and backing down defenders somewhere in the 35 seconds. MSU is strong enough physically that they aren't gonna get run over. It's why you need to move a bunch against them. MSU's lateral movement is worse than their strength, and Virginia doesn't know how to exploit it.

I think Virginia is a slightly better team than Sparty, but I think Sparty wins about 70% of the time (and picked Sparty to win ahead of time). It's just a hideous matchup for the Cavaliers.

Metrics are great sb, you know I follow them. At the end of the day there is always going to be a game or 2 that you need yo score. Always. Every tournament. An efficient 55 isn't good enough

I strongly disagree, and as a Badger fan, I can offer definitive proof you are wrong. Namely, in 2000, Dick Bennett took us to the Final Four with a team that barely averaged 55 PPG. In the tournament, we never scored more than 66.

And you know who beat us? Michigan State, of course. They went 4-0 against us that year. As I said, the Bennett way is a terrible matchup for Michigan State. When Tony loses to them two straight years, it's not conclusive proof that they can't make a Final Four. Had he avoided MSU before the Final Four like his daddy did, I'm firmly convinced he could have made a Final Four.

Get the fuck out of here.

You kept talking about how some team was going to hang 75 on UVa and they wouldn't be able to score that much.

You missed by a fucking mile.

Take that away, and your argument boiled down to "UVA is going to lose when some team scores more than they do"

Way to go Kreskin. You said some team was going to get hot against UVA score a lot and UVA would lose. you were wrong on two out of three.

No cookie for you.

That said, I still love you man.

You were also fortunate that Anderson never came back fully healthy.

as in all sports alot is left up to the officials . a clean block turns into a foul and 2 points . a clear walk turns into the hoop and a foul . it is easy to see it in slow motion or replay. so the refs are human and makes mistakes . so on to next year . that was a black and blue game hats off to both sides .

UVA averaged less than 62 ppg this year vs teams in the tourney. That's not ever going to do it. Period. It took 1 strong shooting game by 1 guy to beat them. I'm sorry but that's not surprising. They don't score. When you don't score you can't win a title. You don't have to be great, you just have to be able to overcome deficits vs good teams at some point. They can't. They didnt. Color me unshocked.

That's not even remotely close to being true. Not counting the NCAAT games they averaged 66 ppg against tournament teams and with a healthy Justin Anderson they averaged 72 ppg against the tournament teams. After the Anderson injury they only scored 55 ppg against tournament teams. The Anderson injury was significant and it was pretty clear he wasn't healthy.

They just weren't the same team. Had he been healthy their offense was plenty good.

OP, you also proclaimed that UVa would lose to Belmont. Just shut the fuck up for a change. You are wrong more often than you are right.

My mistake. you were talking about other teams scoring EIGHTY FIVE on UVA. you missed the bulls-eye, the target, the field the target was in, and the zip code the field was in.

Stop acting like you got it right.

And as mentioned above... Belmont.

Anderson's production was more than cut in half after he returned.

Before Injury:
ppg: 13
fg%: 48%
3 pt fg%: 48%
rpg: 5
apg: 2

Post injury:
ppg: 5.75
fg%: 35%
3 pt fg: 11%
rpg: 2.5
apg: .25

They averaged 17 ppg less against tournament teams after the injury.

That's significant.

Have to give Tom Izzo credit. He is really good at getting his teams ready to play in the NCAA tournament. I was shocked at the number of layups that Virginia never allows. Also Virginia did a terrible job of blocking out. Michigan State out hustled, out ran, and out played Virginia and made it look easy. Congrats to a great win.
