I don't see any grey area. Left hander cannot break the 90degree plane with their right leg. Right hander cannot move their left foot before their right (step off the rubber first). Both must come set before the pitch...etc. maybe it was pounded into my head as a youngster but I can spot a balk almost every time.

I dont mind if the call it or if they dont call it. But they should be consistent with it.

For example, earlier this year, a balk was called on Cueto because did one of his shimmys with a runner on first. This is something he does as part of his normal wind-up, and he has done it throughout his career with runners on. No explanation was ever offered as to why THAT pitch was called a balk, and it threw Cueto into a semi-funk for about a month because he was no longer clear about what was legal and what was not.

All I ask for is consistency and clarity. If I have that, then I know how to react.
