Dodger's pitcher Julio Urias picked off Harper last night.......It was clearly a balk......Announcers agreed

question then;

How many MLB umpires does it take to call a balk?

answer;

obviously more than six

I was watching Kershaw in Game 5. Multiple times he didn't come set. Weird.

Balks are called less often than offensive pass interference in football.

Both need to be AT LEAST tripled from their current iteration.

Hell the game winning catch in the Ohio St/Wisky game was an OBVIOUS OPI.

They just pretty much aren't looking for it unless you shamelessly flaunt it.

disagree. His front foot CLEARLY is going towards home plate.

He's well past 45 degrees there.

freeze it at 46 seconds. That's like 75 degrees easy towards the plate.

The real issue is that they missed his front leg crossing his back leg.

The angle thing, pitchers have to egregiously break it to get it called against them.

I bullshit this because 'you have to pay attention at all times'.
No, when the pitcher makes a clear move to home, you're supposed to get a bigger lead. It's dumb that the umps don't enforce this clear violation.

If the pitcher faked a pitch to home, you jumped to get a lead, then he throws to first to get you out... saying "you need to pay attention at all times" would be a bullshit thing to say.

Because it's s balk. And you should expect it to be called.

If I'm playing tennis, and my opponent lets the ball bounce twice, picks it up, and throws it in the air and slams it in me as I walk off the court because I thought the point was already over, saying "you should pay attention at all times" would be a dumb thing to say. No. I expect the chair ump to call it my point, as usual, and we move on

Balk rules can be so frustrating and confusing. It's hard when I'm watching with less-than-casual viewers and trying to explain why a pitcher moving his toe half an inch is a worth an extra base, but Cueto popping and locking halfway through his windup is perfectly fine..

I usually just say "I dont know man some rules are weird, sure wouldn't want to be an umpire."

I am a little miffed that one umpire didn't call it a balk... Considering (as you mentioned) the rules are so grey. You'd figure at least one ump would have called it, even by mistake

Probably half or more of lefty pickoffs and a good portion of righty pick offs are balks. It's a fairly easy rule to enforce but umpires have let it slide for a long time. The emphasis on speeding up the game hasn't helped.
