Uhh, been there done that. Well, at least all his coaches have been mighty hesitant to put him there. His best offensive season was at wing with Geno his rookie year (think he put up more points this year, less goals). He excells at C, but can be used at wing...just a risk.

risk with a selfish me-first lazy russian center, as we all know they all are, sure...

but we're talking backyard sod farm rink chemistry here

doesn't get any tighter chemistry than that unless they were named Sedin

They would fucking love every minute of it. I shudder at the thought. That could be scary good.

Could you imagine the elder moving to the wing though?

Honestly it may be better. Jordan isn't a true finisher, though I do think he's gotten loads better at that. Look at his goals this postseason. But yeah, they'd certainly have to try playing them on a line together. At least on the PP.

I think there is a very real chance Staal could have a new employer along with a new wife by Monday. I just can't figure any other reason why Penguin management would let that information out unless they wanted it to be out.

But why would Pittsburgh want that out? It wouldn't help his trade value at all. Sure, more teams may call about him, but they won't offer the same with the other rumors about him wanting to test the waters in a year.

I think it could increase the interest that other organizations might not have had leading up to the draft tomorrow. The GM just got done saying he was loathe to trade Staal, and wasn't entertaining offers.

That could have all changed after Jordan's camp nixed this deal.

Edit: and trade value be damned. We're talking about a league with Brian Burke in it, plus a team that just hoisted the cup having made some blockbuster deals the previous year to make it there. You just don't know what might happen.

hold on one second... we have reserved his "massive overpayment plan" for this summer, thankyouverymuch.
I understand CBJ is in the on-deck circle, with Anaheim 'in the hole'.

Well, now the worry is apparently that his value is too low on the market because he likely won't sign with anyone but CAR, but CAR won't trade value if they feel they can have him next year anyway. I dunno, regardless I trust Shero. If he's moved, Shero's winning the deal.

@pghiconoclast
Paul Gaustad can somehow fetch a 1st rounder as a rental, Sergei Bobrovsky can net 3 picks, but Staal has no value? Not buying it.

However, there is this point.

Exactly

I trust Ray, as well. If Carolina is low-balling him, which we really have no idea, he could easily turn around to the other offers he has received from the rest of the league and say, "Let's make a deal!"

Staalsie doesn't have a no trade clause. If he wanted to, I'm sure he could bait that hook and toss it on out there for the sharks to fight over.

I was just about to post something along these lines. Staal as a full-season rental, plus first negotiating rights before he hits free agency, is still a solid pickup and has a good deal of value. Even if it's for only one year, you're getting a full year of a 25+ goal scorer, 50+ point producer, and Selke candidate, powerplay and penalty kill specialist. That's a lot of things, and a lot of value. Then you have his rights the next off season to either sign him to an extension or get something back by trading his rights.
