“Johnny Hockey” is headed to the NHL.

Boston College junior forward Johnny Gaudreau, who is all but assured to win the Hobey Baker Award as the nation’s top collegiate hockey player tonight at the Loews Hotel, has opted to skip his senior season with the Eagles. He will sign with the Calgary Flames.

Gaudreau will be picked up, along with his senior teammate Bill Arnold, and flown in the Flames’ corporate jet to Vancouver, where he and Arnold will begin their NHL careers Sunday in a game against the Canucks.

Gaudreau's ELC will be 3 years, Arnold's 2 years. However the game does not being to toll the player's FA clock. Gaudreau 7 years to UFA.

edit - I don't think that's quite true - I think Gaudreau and Arnold becomes UFA's at 27 years old no matter what

That's what I was thinking, wouldn't the one game count as one year burned off on Johnny's contract?

Yes, I'm pretty sure it does. I removed my edit because I'm not 100% sure.

A follow up from Pronman:

Corey Pronman ‏@coreypronman
CGY will get Gaudreau's 21 (next season), 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27 year old seasons.

Yes, playing in the game on Sunday with burn one year of Gaudreau's ELC, but that's small potatoes to getting him signed, in my opinion.

5'7" (that might be generous) and 150 lbs. He'd better have some beefy linemates.

Ryan Strome has Matt Martin on his line. Martin hasn't produced like this since junior when he played with Stamkos. The Flames will protect Gaudreu. No worries about that with Burke in charge. I just can't figure out why he has a problem with Bobby Ryan yet he likes this kid?

Yeah, I mean my preference would be not to burn it, but it also means Johnny is a year closer to cashing in and it's not like the Flames are up against the cap.

We don't even know how good he is at the NHL level yet. Burning a year for 1 or 2 games is a bad idea as far as I'm concerned, but I understand it from the Flames perspective. They just signed the Hobey Baker Award winner, why not find out where he stands right now.

I think the key word is patience though, I mean there's no doubting he's talented, but there will be some growing pains as well. The Wings took their time with Nyquist, the Flames need to have the same patience with Gaudreau.
