I was wondering guys, with the Hammer's trade value being extremely high right now, and all of the closers seemingly getting hurt around Baseball.

Do you guys think it may be smart to trade Hanrahan right now, for as much as we can get & really try to fleece a team?

Just curious, for the thoughts of my fellow Pirates posters on this?

Thanks,

Burgh.

If we can fleece a team then we'd be stupid not to.

No one overpays in trades in April, June at the earliest, and its better to wait till July, especially for a reliever.

I have no problem trading him, but what do we trade him for? The only thing I would really want is a major league ready bat, and I don't think anyone is giving one of them up for a closer.
I guess what I am saying is I would wait until the break and see how we stand. If the market is still strong then, we could probably get more than if we traded him now.
I would like to add that the days of fleecing are probably over for relievers, they only way to truely fleece a minor league system is with an ace pitcher, and I am never in favor of trading one of those, unless of course, it is a true fleecing.

The problem is that everyone needs hitting, especially this season, with offense so down everywhere...I bet the Pirates could get a #4/#5 starter (a la James Mcdonald) and two C+ prospects. Hanrahan might be at a high value, but the market for closers is non-existant.

the time to trade our players is before the year starts when people see potential, as we have young guys who havent put it together, ie walker, cutch, meek, tabata, presley, morton, mcdonald. hanrahan is the only top line player that can be traded one up for another "star." none of them will bring what we want, but we have to package them with certain minor leaguers for a 3 for 1 package. our scouting of our own and of our targets have little margin for error.
once our team gets into the year, the stats are not = to the potential, so trade value decreases except to the great scouts that can really see through our poor team stats. we will never make good trades during the season with this group.

i wouldn't mind packaging hanrahan and one of mclouth/tabata/presley to the red sox to fill their two needs and sell high on hanrahan. they can throw jones in the OF to fill in until marte is ready. obviously it would have to be a significant return.

If the Sox overpay, I'm for it. Otherwise, hold onto those outfielders until they would actually bring something back. Presley's been the best of them this year, and he hasn't even been all that great.

2014 is our year to target. our scouts are the key in finding the ones we need to pursue and identifying which ones in our system are at their peak and we can package and sell hi.
