Damn, I was really hoping Pierre would get it.
So...freaking...underwhelming. He's 65, he left Carolina under the guise of "retirement", so yeah, let's get him another job! The only way I see this working is if they bring in another young gun to work alongside him, groomed for the future. How is Rutherford going to be here for more than 5 years? His track record isn't really sterling. His teams made the playoffs 4 times in 20 years. His draft history is far from great. Just underwhelming considering some of the other options. It's like the safe pick. I do think that he won't be a "yes" man like many, including myself, worried...but still. If it's Rutherford, and he doesn't fire Blysma, I'm going to probably take a year off from being a Pens fan.
@emptynetters Imagine the uproar over Jim Rutherford if Pierre's McGuire's name was never considered.
This. Most of my TL on twitter is "at least it's not Pierre". Crikey.
If someone were to tell me the day after the Rangers series ended that next year's team would have Rutherford as GM, and Blysma still as coach, I would've punched them in the face.

heh, really a great point. maybe pierre was brought up on purpose?
Yeah. I hear ya. I can't really see how Rutherford is any better than Shero. I just don't like hires like this. Hockey can be such an old boy's club sometimes. This reminds me of John Muckler's hiring in Ottawa. A team with an elite core, with young stars and a potentially bright future, hires one of the old guard to put them over the top.
Muckler then went on to betray Marian Hossa while dealing for an asshole in Heatley (albeit one who had several outstanding seasons in Ottawa), thereby pissing off Zdeno Chara; betting a peak season on the health of an ancient Dominik Hasek; signing Redden instead of Chara and going off the board to draft Brian Lee 9th overall instead of Anze Kopitar, Marc Staal, Martin Hanzal or TJ Oshie who were all rated higher than Lee. He also drafted like shit.
For your sake I hope this turns out better than Mucks's time in Ottawa.
Considering our CEO/President is a former political PR man, it was ABSOLUTELY brought up on purpose.
At least Pens postseason press conferences won't be littered with Kabongos, monsters and elite, big body presences.
Definitely reeks of old boys club. At the very least this is a lateral move from Shero. Shero's track record was MUCH better than Rutherford's. Makes no sense.
