How do you feel about Jed 11 months later?

He hired Baalke when we all said no

Baalke hired Jim Harbaugh

Jim Harbaugh kept Alex Smith

Without Jed none of those things would have happend.

Just to play devil's advocate, who's to say that any other GM would not, or could not have delivered Harbaugh?

?? We needed it to happen quickly and Baalke was in play from day 1. New GM from a team like "Pittsburg, Philly etc would have wanted to bring in a coach from the franchise they left Im sure"

Im sure Baalke got to know Harbaugh while he was at Standford.

Miami's owner and GM tried to land Harbaugh. Can you imagine what our record would be right now had we hired the second choice?

Jed deserves the props for digging into his pockets and offering the money that was necessary to sign harbs.

Firstly, it's not easy to uproot an established GM from an established team like the ones you pointed out. Secondly, GMs done typically have the same coaching staff connections that say a HC has with regards to bringing in his own guys.

I'm just saying that making the York - Baalke - Harbaugh connection is a bit of a stretch and it's not to say that a different GM could not have brought in Harbaugh. Just MHO

But don't you think that Harbaugh might have come on for reasons other than just the GM? Possibly the location, connection to Walsh etc...?

BTW - I'm not saying that I'm dissatisfied with the job that either Jed or Baalke have done so far. As I pointed out in my first post, just playing devil's advocate here.

Yeah but then you also have to look at Baalke's willingness to share the spotlight with Harbaugh. Baalke and Harbaugh genuinely get along. They play one on one basketball and golf together. Both guys are ultra competitive and Baalke seems to have added players this year that fit into what Harbaugh wants.

Had a "big name" GM gone after Harbaugh I think Jim would have thought twice. He has more power and rope with a less recognized Baalke instead of a Holmgren or Jerry Jones looking over his shouler

I feel better about him now than I did a few months ago but he has a lot of bad will to overcome. I will have a better idea of how I feel about him in a few years. Right now it could all be the blind squirrel effect.

Hell, who was the second choice? Was there a second choice? Was it Gruden or perhaps Billick, I have no idea, I can't remember anyone. Makes me quite glad we are not dealing with him.

Let's not annoint Baalke a genuis quite yet, but I think it's clear he's been better than McBoosehound. He's had very high draft picks with which to work, but he hasn't screwed it up. If Davis develops into a great pass protector I'll jump on the Baalke bandwagon...

Jed York won me over when he hired Harbs. I was ready to pull my hair out when I heard the Dolphins signed him. They paid top money for the guy, and it was worth every penny.

York was the biggest reason the 49ers had Singletary as the Head Coach. Which is why I think McCloughan quit. He wasn't happy with being a hand puppet GM under Nolan, and when he finally became a real GM, he was still a hand puppet to Jed York who told him who he had to hire as HC.

Anyway, I don't hate him or love him. I appreciate that he has a passion to see the 49ers win. So far it seems he made the right choices with Harbaugh and Baalke, but he made a lot of wrong decisions with Nolan, Singletary, and McCloughan before that. Not quite fair to act like he is some sort of visionary with his latest GM/HC tandem. It is just nice to see that he learned from his earlier mistakes/failures though.

We weren't even his top offer as far as money goes. He signed here for less so that argument really can't be made.

I will give Jed York credit for hiring Baalke and also allowing him to pursue Harbs. My original assessment of Baalke was that he seemed to be going in the same direction as Mclueless. However, he has shown so far that he has a knack for finding good talented players. I'm not sure how much influence he had in the Anthony Davis pick because i know Singletary really wanted him, but i definitely give Baalke credit for Bowman, Culliver, and Aldon. Jed's real contribution was basically picking Baalke to be our GM and he took it from there.

Jed still put up 25 million for him. I believe that's more money than any coach has ever gotten. He could've gotten a lot of other guys for a lot less. I couldn't be happier with the way the HC search went. Now if only the Niners had a great QB it would be like the '80's again & my boyhood dreams of another SB would only be a matter of time! :)

True, but if money was Harbaugh's sole concern, then we would have been screwed. I don't disagree with us not giving him more, but you can't give him credit paying more than anyone else. I remember when all of this was going down a lot of us were pissed off because we thought the lower offer may have cost us Harbaugh to the Dolphins. Luckily it didn't turn out that way.

Your boyhood dreams may not be that far off as it is. Keep in mind, HC's sometimes win SB's, while the team just executes the victory. Case in point, SB XIX.

McCloughan was a puppet to Jed York.....thats not what i recall? Jed has to approve decisions but find it hard to believe McCloughan had no say? or is this a case of "as Owner, blame comes with the territory"? if so, ok.

btw - the far majority of this board (ie fans) was more than ok with Singletary....interim and permanent.

Jed York wasn't much of an "Owner" when Nolan was here? or was he President then?

getting back to the OP, agree not getting too excited just yet, but SO FAR......but Jed as Owner, credit comes with the territory.

I think Carroll got $33 million over five years from Seattle and Belichick and Shanahan make a ton as well. Harbs might be close to the top five though. I am glad Jed spent the money.

I don't know what Shanny got from Snyder, but Bowlen paid him $7m just to take a year off from coaching.
