Not a total shock to me. Like it was mentioned, he didn't do the west coast trips for a couple of years now. Neale isn't a spring chicken either (5 years older), but I haven't heard anything about him cutting back travel.

I know a couple people filled in including his son.

From wiki:
His son Mark Jeanneret is the play-by-play announcer for the Portland Pirates and was a substitute for Rick with the Buffalo Sabres on December 27 and 28, 2010 on games against the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers

No surprise jstew. Last year he didn't travel on the long west coast trips. He has said at his age he doesn't enjoy the traveling.

Outside of Buffalo a lot of people don't like him but RJ calls a good game. Like I have always said if you close your eyes and still can tell where the play is that is a good play by play announcer.

I will miss his calling the games because he can take a routine play and make it exciting. He also (contrary to some people's opinion) will say when the team is playing like crap that they are playing like crap and on many occasions he is not shy about saying "The Sabres got away with one there" when the ref misses a call that should have been a penalty.

He is a hell of a lot better than some "homer" announcers in other cities I have heard. I will not mention what cities but some of the one's i've heard NEVER think their teams deserve a penalty and if it's a marginal call carry on about it for 10 minutes. Surprisingly some of them are in big markets too.

Rick Jeanneret and Harry Neale told Howard and Jeremy Thursday morning that they will only call home games and a few selected road games during the 2011-12 season.

More details to come on WGR550.com!

its sad because that type of pxp/colour guy is disappearing around the league ... the "tell it like it is" guy isnt a favorite of team franchise owners. And because teams invariably employ the broadcasters or can pull contracts from radio stations if they are unhappy with the coverage they get, youre seeing alot of these guys go bye bye.

We lost a great one last year in Tom Larscheid and the word is it was because the canucks owners didnt like his criticism. All he did was tell it like it was. He just said what every canucks fan was thinking

i dont know if theres a sound bite out there i can link but during the Kings Canucks first round playoff series last year when the Kings were scoring power play goal over and over again on the canucks ... he had enough ... and he screamed into the mic ... "CANT ANYBODY KILL A POWER PLAY"

classic!

buffhockey, Neale is cutting down his work load too. It's too bad because he comes up with some funny shit sometimes.

One of the funniest things I ever heard him say when talking about a veteran player that had played for many teams was "he has been traded so much, his kids think the moving van is their school bus" I loved it! Can't remember what player he was referring to.

I meant before this announcement I didn't hear anything about Neale cutting down his workload.

Neale does have the knack for saying things like that.

This is so true, many of these guy's today are are blatant homers and this rubs off on the fans. If you ever look at a Sabres GNT guy's like IPW, myself and other's will bitch when the Sabres take stupid penalties and put the blame where it belongs. I wish I had a dime for every time I said "use your fucking head and stay out of the box!"

I have seen many GNT's where the fans bitch because their team is getting called for penalties if they deserve them or not. I can watch a game and be in a GNT and if a penalty is called know who is going to post a complaint about it. We all know who they are.

Harry Neale (like Tom Larscheid) saw plenty of bad Canucks hockey over the years. How can it not seep into your commentary?

while i do love tom ... Ive heard canucks management was also a tad concerned about the way he dealt with players "off air" ... at times he was very confrontational with them ... and when the team travels with the announcing crew, sometimes there was no escaping him

but what are you gonna do ... Toms a very emotional guy

its a funny comparison when you consider how DCMP got his nickname ;) but he's not far removed from playing himself so away from the rink, he's just like another one of the players in terms of their interactions together

i have listened to Dave only a couple periods at most. Im either at the game or watching on TV so I dont get him alot.

Tom is REALLY emotional. I didnt know that about off ice. that is strange. I know he took ownership for being around for so long but that does cross a line of sorts. I loved him on radio, you always knew what he said was true and I wish him well

If I didn't know better, I would have thought you were talking about Mike Lange. Rick and Mike are almost identical when it comes to the bolded part above.
