The Toronto Maple Leafs will have two rookies in their lineup when they open the regular season on Thursday.
Forward Matt Frattin and defenceman Jake Gardiner made the club as the Leafs cut their roster from 29 players to 23 on Monday.
Defenceman Keith Aulie and forward Mike Zigomanis were assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, while defenceman Matt Lashoff and forwards Joey Crabb and Darryl Boyce were placed on waivers for the purpose of sending them down.
Forward Nazem Kadri, out of the lineup for up to four weeks with a sprained left knee is on injured reserve.
Frattin, 23, finished the pre-season as one of the team's leading scorers. The Leafs' second-round pick in 2007 played one game last season, recording five shots on goal against the Montreal Canadiens.
Gardiner, 21, also stood out with the Maple Leafs. A first-round pick of the Anaheim Ducks in 2008, he was traded to the club along with Joffrey Lupul in a packaged deal for defenceman Francois Beauchemin last February.
He scored 10 goals and added 31 assists with the University of Wisconsin Badgers last season and had three assists in 10 games with the Marlies after turning pro late in the campaign.
