It wasn't for competitive fairness to the teams that the 2-3-2 started. It was more for the media. More outlets, both nationally and internationally, cover the Finals than the other playoff series (obviously) and they made the switch so it would be easier travel on them and in turn, the NBA could get better press coverage. Nowadays it doesn't matter so much since travel is easier.

I know it wasn't then but now and days you would think that competitive fairness should be the #1 priority now that they are now that they are no longer a grass roots league. Or they could at least lie about it.
