1. He didn't lead with the crown of his helmet. The initial impact was with his right shoulder pad.

2. It wasn't helmet to helmet

3. The RB wasn't defenseless.

The only rule we ever had in organized football was you couldn't "spear" a guy with your helmet. I remember the coaches lecturing about it in practice.

It was for the protection of both the tackler (neck injury) and the tacklee...
