The preseason game Sunday night between the Vikings and 49ers was chippier than your garden-variety exhibition game, and it escalated after a late and unnecessary collision involving Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams.
Many of the Vikings' starters played into the third quarter, and Williams was pursuing a 49ers run play in the backfield when 49ers reserve offensive lineman Joe Looney rolled up into his legs. Williams limped off the field and was checked out by the team's medical staff.

Watching the play live, it looked like a stroke of bad luck, or a fluke play. But slowed down, it appeared Looney intentionally ducked into Williams, who was blindsided by the hit and had his knee hyperextended laterally.
The 32-year-old veteran expressed his disappointment to the Pioneer Press afterwards:
"I feel all right," Williams said. "Don't really know what's wrong, but I think I'm fine. I was just upset that I'm getting cut like that 11 years in from a guy I don't even know who the guy is. Between the pain and the fact that no one was looking it was terrible."
Looney was not penalized on the play. Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said he intended to contact the league for possible discipline. Defensive end Jared Allen sounded off to NBC sideline broadcaster Michele Tafoya during the game on the sideline.
"From what I understand, it was a dirty play," Allen said. "It sucks."

Watching the replay it certainly does look like a cheap shot and I am not sure how the officials missed it. He really should be penalized for this!

Yes it was a dirty play.

The question is was it a legal block?

Absolutely it was a dirty play, he went at his knee for no reason other than injuring him.

It looked like a fat ass who was too lazy to throw a proper cut block so he just took out the guys knee. What goes around comes around

Yes, he hit the knee to make a block, it was a dick move and meant to hurt the guy.

Why not? I'm seriously asking because I'm not 100% clear on some of the blocking rules for OL.

This is exactly what happened to Brian Cushing last year.

I'm not clear on the rules either but looking at it you don't wait until the play is pretty much over the go down like that at someone's knees...

Not unless you're dirty as a 3-day-old diaper.

I'm assuming that it was a legal black because they didn't fine or suspend him for it, but I don't know for sure. I actually have zero problem with dirty play if it's according to the rules. It would piss me off if I were on the receiving end of it, but if it's not illegal then that's the NFL's fault not the player's.

In the preseason absolutely. If this is the late regular season or playoffs and there's a little better chance to break I'm ok with it.

It was legal but dirty. I was actually impressed by the 49ers forum for calling it the same way. I expected a lot of 'Yay! He's our guy and that was great!'

I love people who think that because they say it.... it must be true.

How the fuck does anyone know what his intentions are. It looked like he kind of fell down at the last minute to me. It was a bad hit, but it was also legal, and I don't THINK he did it intentionally.

Still he should know better.
