INDYCAR is always touting it's 'Road to Indy' driver developmental ladder system, but is the last rung before IndyCar in serious trouble?

It should be noted that the following piece was written by an unsuccessful Indy Lights hopeful - who some will say is WAAAY too over-aged - but the fact remains that the upcoming Friday support race for the Indy 500 has a paltry eleven participants.

I think the krappy economy for nearly 6 years now has exacted a terrible toll on everybody as corporations continue to sit on their assets and sponsor dollars dwindle. Nobody can afford much of anything and certainly not the initial investment to get into racing. Just look at the stands of any racing series. There are plenty of seats available on race day. So, I think our excesses will be sacrificed to just survive.
