Is our secondary one of the worse in the West?

With the Cards signing Antonio Cromartie to pair with Peterson and Seattle's excellent secondary. Plus the Rams secondary not that bad either. Is it safe to say were in the bottom when it comes to secondary's in the NFC West?

I'd say were tied for second with Arizona, Petterson is a bit over rated and I think our secondary as a whole is under rated. I have a feeling our back field will be a lot better this year with Reid going into his second year and Cully coming back, draft a stud CB in the draft and let the training camp competition play it self out.

The Rams don't have a particularly good secondary, and particularly if we're taking the safeties into consideration, I think we've got an edge over them. As it stands right now, AZ and SEA probably have two top-five defensive backfields, so yes, at least on paper, they are better right now.

Good article from Barrows a few days ago:

49ers Blog and Q&A: Sub-par secondary? Don't judge yet, 49ers fans

Going into 2011, it looked like our secondary could be a disaster. Brown had never been a regular starter. Goldson had really only been okay in the two prior years. And Rogers and Whitner were disappointing former high picks. There is somewhat less certainty this year, but Baalke has shown a good eye for the secondary. Let's see what happens once games are played.

CB situation yes but our Front 7 is the best and our Safety's are atleast 2nd.

It's the 2nd week of free agency and the draft is still a long way off. I wouldn't worry or judge any team until after the draft at the very earliest.

4 Rams

Pretty easy to rank, too.

Too early to tell because it's obvious we're looking towards the draft to beef up the secondary.

So with 5 picks in the first 3 rounds we have quite a bit of room to improve in that area.

Let's see what happens after the draft. I see the Niners drafting at least a CB and a safety. I'm interested to find out if Culliver can back from his injury. I see him starting with Brock and hopefully Verrett as the nickle back. I wonder who the Niners have in mind to play SS.

:burt: stop complaining, the 49ers have made it to three straight NFC championship games.

Shut up with this nonsense logic. The goal is Superbowl Wins; I will not settle for mediocre and falling short! :charlie:

Do you think the Bills do not regret not winning a Super Bowl? How about the Vikings? The ultimate goal is to win the Super Bowl.:L

Wait am I missing something here? Arizona has a good not great CB in Peterson a once very good CB in Cromartie a good but small coming of an ACL injury NCB/FS in Mathieu and a SS that didn't do enough so I would remember who he is.

Rams very good CB in Jenkins and that's it. We have the 2nd best secondary in the NFC West and it's not even close IMO.

I'm assuming Mathieu is healthy, but if he is, I give them the edge. Peterson is a very good CB, and their top-two are very arguably better than our top guy (who is Brock, I guess?). Our safeties are better, but Mathieu prior to injury was in Reid's ballpark at least. And Yeremiah Bell is at least mostly sound.

It all depends on how Fangio will use the re-tooled secondary...
