The Washington Redskins have lost a handful of key players already this season. So a rebuilding team trying to add depth already is being tested. It’s a tough way to go with 13 games remaining.
The Redskins have 10 players on their injured reserve list, though one is linebacker James Gayle, who was a longshot to make the roster and was placed on this list in the spring. For what it's worth, the Redskins had 12 players on injured reserve at the end of last season. So, yes, it's a lot.
Here are the other nine:
LB Junior Galette: Would have provided a strong pass rush presence, giving the Redskins speed off the edge -- something they don’t have. They miss him badly. Galette’s speed next to Jason Hatcher's muscle would have provided some fun stunt calls for the coaches.
TE Niles Paul: Jordan Reed is off to a good start in terms of catching the ball, but the Redskins could use Paul for his all-around play. He had hoped his extra bulk would help as a blocker. Paul also is missed quite heavily on special teams. I do like new tight end Derek Carrier and Anthony McCoy looks like he can be a good blocker for them.
S Duke Ihenacho: They needed depth at safety and didn’t have a whole lot.Jeron Johnson was supposed to provide some, but he hasn’t impressed the coaches nearly enough and when Ihenacho went down, the Redskins turned toTrenton Robinson. They’re thin at this spot. Ihenacho made mistakes, but he looked good in the opener before getting hurt.
LB Adam Hayward: If Paul and Hayward were still on special teams, the Redskins might have lived with Kai Forbath's short kickoffs. Hayward was a veteran leader on this unit. He’s missed.
CB Justin Rogers: Mostly a nickel cornerback, but he at least provided depth. Was not supposed to be anything other than a fourth or fifth cornerback until injuries and suspensions hit. The Redskins can withstand the loss with veteranWill Blackmon in the slot, and DeAngelo Hall returns in three-to-four weeks. But you don’t like the secondary depth being tested so early in the season.
OG Shawn Lauvao: Big blow to the offensive line. He had been playing much better than in 2014 -- coaches liked that he improved in the latter part of last season and it had carried over. The Redskins say their line depth is much better and we’ll find out if that’s accurate. They have stockpiled guards in recent years -- signing Lauvao in 2014, drafting Spencer Long in ’14 and Arie Kouandjio (andBrandon Scherff) in ’15. Time for it to pay off.
TE Logan Paulsen: Veteran blocker and special teams performer. He could have helped, but he was not a lock to make the final roster. Even before he was hurt, the Redskins were seeking more tight end help.
LB Martrell Spaight: The Redskins hoped the rookie linebacker would become a special teams contributor this season. Terrance Plummer has taken his place; Plummer’s gaffe led to a blocked punt in Week 3.
RB Silas Redd: Far from a lock to make the final roster; he was behind all the backs who eventually did make it, and it was tough to see them keeping four running backs plus a fullback.

- this is why depth is so so important and why we are a rebuilding squad 2 to 3 years away from being a perennial playoff contender
