Were those attacks motivated by religious extremism, or the Chechen civil war and the fight for Chechen sovereignty from Russia?

The school attack... I think it was called the Beslan school siege ...and I'm writing this off of the top of my head... No google... But it was Chechen rebels that took a public school, I believe , jr high age kids...they executed teachers and students on an hourly basis...the Russian government responded by pumping gases into the school...in an attempt to put everyone to sleep..mainly the rebels...but the fumes ended up killing up to 400 rebels and children.. The Russian soldiers then entered the school and delivered a shot to the forehead of all the hostage takers. Vladimir Putin was in charge then and took a lot of heat for how the situation was handled. He later famously said "Our problem (Muslim Chechen extremists) will soon be America's problem".

I don't either, I was just wondering if it was driven by civil war or religious extremism.

It was carried out by Muslim extremists from what I thought I heard on TV today. No matter what your fight is, murdering school children is inexcusable

And sadly I think he dragged his brother down with him. The younger one seemed to have a bright future not so long ago.

Dont know if id go that far (ie had a bright future) but the young one from appearances and info looks to have been a part of american society (friends, jobs, school)

Yup, I don't think anyone is ever going to argue that there's a justification for murdering children. I was just trying to remember the context of the story.
