Well, an idiot in general but I think my router is fried/overheating. Is it difficult to install a new router and does it have to be compatible with the modem?

New routers usually have pretty good picture instructions.......

basically they are plug and play...

If it's wireless you will want to change the security so that your neighbors aren't using your connection-thus slowing down your speed...

routers are really easy to setup. Just make sure you right down your login and password, oh and this may come in handy if you want to change your settings 192.168.1.1

Not if its not a Linksys/Cisco router. Belkin uses 192.168.2.1 and D-Link uses something out in left field. I forget exactly what. Also it easy to set up a router if you have cable not so easy if you have AT&T DSL.

Well, he did say he was going to use netgear and yes I know they all don't use the same, but they're usually pretty similar.
