MLB Trade Rumors is running a series on determining which 15 players would be protected if an expansion draft were to happen this offseason. The most recent team that they profiled is the Giants. They selected the first 7 guys but have the readers voting on the remaining 8 guys who should be protected. I voted and, believe me, it wasn't easy picking 8, and for the opposite reason of overflowing talent. I later kicked myself for not protecting Flores and/or Solano. I left off A Garcia and Moronta because I figured that they'd be safe after recovering from significant injuries. Yeah, Longoria was mainly because I was trying to pick quickly and missed a couple of names. Rogers should go on my list without saying.

Longoria probably falls in the same boat. So I think that Cueto, A. Garcia, Longoria and Moronta could easily pass through the draft not protected. The only one that the team would kick themselves over losing would be Moronta, if he were taken and came back better than ever. Cueto could possibly bounceback well enough for a team to possibly gamble on him too.

Now I'm just trying to live up to expectations. And honestly, couldn't a few of your guys easily be swapped out with Rogers and it not make a whole lot of difference?

And the rules on MLBTradeRumors say that guys with no-trade clauses are automatically protected? As well as pending free agents?

No trades are protected. Pending FAs are not (they technically are not on the roster)

It would be interesting to know the rules for whether a team had to protect a no trade clause player, because of the nature of that clause, or if it actually allowed the team to expose that player. I would assume the former because exposing the player, in essence, violates that clause.
And yes, the players to be protected would only be on the 40 man roster (as well as who would get drafted).

I would think no-trade players are automatically protected. I would not have protected Belt or Crawford if that wasn't the case, but still stick with Posey. You can't let that guy get away.
