I like the signing. They were backed into a corner (13 days until season opener). There is virtually no risk with the signing.

But, there is a big difference in 'liking' the signing and having confidence that it will work. I'm just not confident that Faine will be the player he once was and I'm definitely not confident that he will be durable.

Again, given the situation, I think this is the best we can do right now.

It was the only thing the Bengals could do....will it work out? I have my doubts, especially with his durability....but again, there were really no other options.....our run blocking has sucked all training camp and preseason, so he probably won't make it much worse than it already is.....with new players across the middle of the line now, I'm sure our opponents will put them to the test quickly....could be bad news for Dalton.....after a week from Monday I'm sure we will know more, because you know that Ravens defense will be coming.....

BTW, I think we'll win between 6-8 games this season.

I agree with Grad...I would've signed him. I'm just not that optimistic about how he'll perform. Maybe a better option will surface on the waiver wire...we'll see.

I like the signing and have confidence that Jeff Faine will be a more than adequate replacement for Kyle Cook. One of the silliest arguments I heard against his signing was that me must not have been any good if he was, "sitting at home". Well I'd counter that with Teams don't sign scrubs, especially Centers, to $37 million contracts. The reason why Faine was let go in Tampa Bay wasn't due to an erosion of skills or play but because the Bucs weren't willing to pay him that amount after signing Carl Nicks for $47.5 million, Vincent Jackson for $55.55 million and Eric Wright for $37.5 million. And rather than be bitter about his circumstance and talking trash about the organization he agreed with the move. That shows maturity and a team player in my book. Those are the type of guys you win with not the selfish and talented Ocho types.

excerpt~

"I can understand the decision. They made an investment in (free agent) Carl Nicks -- looking into the future and trying to build through youth -- and I think it was the right decision," Faine told WQYK-AM in Tampa, per JoeBucsFan.com. "I'm going to be playing for two, three more years, and they're looking to build something to last."

Faine, 31, complimented Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik for his open communication prior to letting him go (which, by the way cost the center millions).

"I had a fantastic time. I have nothing but good things to say about this organization and how they do business," Faine said. "I can't be bitter. I still have years to play, and hopefully win games wherever I go."

I want to know why we had no real back up to start with...

I think the Bengals have always valued adding/drafting tackles, but have always gone light on interior linemen. This strategy has led to a lot of bad guards and centers on this team.

That said, I think the strategy this year was to go with Wharton and Zeitler at guard and Cook at center with Boling the back up at all three positions. Two injuries in the preseason hurt.

What did you expect him to say, "I sucked and wasn't a shell of my former self last season, so they let me go..?"

So how was he a shell of his former self? He only gave up 1.5 sacks last season after not giving up a single sack the year before. You guys are making arguments that are not grounded in reality or truth.

ProFootballWeekly.com - Jeff Faine

Fact: The guy was on his couch until this week.
Question: Why? If he is a starting caliber player why doesn't he have a job.

Fact: ProFootball Focus had him graded out as the 4th worst run blocking center.

Not sure what this means as I know next to nothing about profootball focus. But, I think it shows that some folks don't think much of the guy's recent performance.

Fact: He has never played an entire season. Most years he doesn't even come close.
Question: Why would he start now? He's not any younger.

Are those questions/facts/points grounded enough for you?

Again, I'm all for the signing. I applaud the Bengals for ensuring that they have a veteran presence to start the season.... I just have a hard time believing that Faine will be anything more than a below-average, end of his career center. I hope I'm wrong.

ProFootballWeekly.com - Eric Ghiaciuc

Ghiaciuc gave up 4 sacks in 2008 and only 1 sack in 2007.

Even though people love to flaunt the numbers, neither sacks accumulated nor sacks given up define a player on either side of the field.

Case in point : our o-line last season was not very good in pass protection, yet was in the top 3rd of the league in sacks given up.

In addition to what grad said, as has already been mentioned, PFF ranked him 2nd worst center last season and 8th worst in 2010. Walter Football also did not have a glowing review of him.

Not to mention the fact that 'sacks given up' is a terrible stat for centers. Every center in the league will have a low number as the defender that lines up over them (if there is one) is unlikely to be a sack threat. Most pressure still comes from the edge. In cases where blitzes do come from the middle (or stunts), I don't think they charge it to the center.

He may be bad, but PFF also had Cook rated as the 10th best C. I don't take much stock in anything they say. He was no where near a top 10 C.

Actually our pass defense was very good as Dalton was only sacked 24 times. It was out run blocking, WITH Cook, that was terrible.

I'm not really sure what you're arguing about? You wrote, "I like the signing." [...] "Again, I'm all for the signing. I applaud the Bengals for ensuring that they have a veteran presence to start the season." So what is it? You like the signing but you don't like me saying that I like the signing too? This just proves my point that "some" people will take the opposite position even when they don't realize they agree with me. Man this is hysterical!
