And this article is pretty tastelessly written.

This has nothing to do with my fandom, but with my humanity and gender. It reads as if the guy got caught underage drinking, or smoking pot.

Many wondered whether Cousins was snubbed from the Super Series and Team Canada for his alleged off-ice transgressions. Cousins and two teammates were arrested on Aug. 25 for having sexual intercourse with an unnamed woman, known to the players, against her will. Prosecutors have not dropped the charges, which are still pending in court. Cousins attended counseling before being reinstated by the Greyhounds.

The embarrassing situation gave Cousins, the Greyhounds and the Flyers a collective black eye. It's an image that he's still trying to shed.

"At the pro level, teams expect you to be an adult and act like one," Laperriere said. "He's got a good heart . . . Let's be honest, stuff like that has been happening forever. You can't get away with anything now. He can't put himself in those situations.

"He's been in trouble with this stuff, but hopefully that's all going to go away. Part of my job is telling him that he needs to learn from that. You need to be careful what you're doing. All of our prospects need to learn from his situation."

Giving him a chance, that's great, but the guy is acting like it's some minor detail. Sickens me how often this crap happens in sports.

It's called entitlement. When young people see athletes getting away with things such as murder they feel they can get away with just about anything too. I don't agree with it either, but our court system is a joke.

I love you Pix, but you are reaching and I mean faaaar on this one.

Ian, like everyone else should, is assuming that Cousins is innocent of the r*pe charge and that Cousins made the same mistake that millions of young adults have and that's party too hardy at the wrong time.

I mean...I'm fairly certain this one will be in Canada. But regardless, it's Lappy's comments that are so asinine. "Aw, come on, this happens all the time...you just can't get away with ANYTHING these days."

I don't like the assumption that r*pe is okay, sorry. I understand the concept of innocent until proven guilty, but it's hard in the world of sports to not become bitter. The cases are far too plentiful. It just reminds me far too much of the idiot in Steubenville (that situation was obviously worse) who essentially played it off as "boys will be boys" and that "the girl obviously threw herself at them (even though she was passed out)". Different situations, but the same rings true. I obviously am predisposed to dislike this kid being a Flyers pick up, but my anger in this stems much more from a woman being scarred. It doesn't even mention what teammates were involved, but 3 versus one woman? Gosh that boils my blood.

He's a former athlete & a Flyers employee, what did you expect him to say?

Go ahead and misconstrue what he and I said all day and all night for all I care Pix.

I have better things to do than to argue my own point of view with you.

Take care

I realize my response came off strong, I get defensive about this stuff for a reason. Not intended to say anything on you or your character. Per usual, it's opinions. They differ, no biggie.

I understand your position pix. Canadian courts aren't open to the public are they? It would be great if the court threw the book at Cousins & the other 2 involved if found guilty. Whether or not it happens is another story.

from all accounts cousins is not the primary suspect here. the article here doesn't really dig in to the case, but it sounds like it was one of his teammates that was the primary culprit and cousins and the 3rd were there when it happened. obviously still bad to be there and not stop it, but it's not a stretch to say it was two drunk kids hooking up and the girl hating herself for it afterwards and deciding to press charges.

not saying that is the case, and not saying cases should be dismissed for that reason, but the quantity of times situations like that have happened are probably immeasurable, and to expect an outsider, who is most likely intoxicated himself, to discern between a guy getting lucky because she's drunk, and a guy forcing himself on her, is asking a lot of the drunk witness IMO.

if i've got the story wrong, and he did r*pe or play a part in someone being r*pe, string him up by his fingers and toes for the rest of eternity, he would deserve it. i'm just saying, don't rush to judgement at this point. look at the duke lacross case for a recent example of why it's not right to rush to judgement.

the trial has also been pushed back 4 times by my count, if there was credible evidence to support the case i dont think it would be pushed back the way it has been.

also, just as a side point, lappiererre is often referred to as one of the 'best guys' in hockey. based on the credibility and history of the philadelphia media, that quote could've come after the question: "Are you worried about him partying?" that does happen all the time, and if you're doing it underage, you shouldn't be getting away with it, so they dont.. dont underestimate the media's ability, and philly's especially, to paint people in a bad light

Yeah, I think we need to be careful before throwing Lappy under the bus. It wouldn't be the first time that quotes were taken out of context and/or re-arranged to make a story juicier.

I'm with pix on this, but not specifically in opposition to Lapperierre. The attitude around these sorts of things is just far too casual, and Lapperierre's comments perpetuate that casual attitude. You don't "hope it goes away," you hope for the truth and justice to come out of the situation, and for players in the future to actually respect women sexually.

oh i dont think anyone is against pix here, if lappy is referring to this incident in those quotes, he's being way to non-chalant about it. no question. but he also may be referring to something else, like a partying lifestyle that he's hoping cousins outgrows.

on the flip side, and in defense of cousins, it is very possible that this is an incident of a drunk girl wanting to repair a mistake she made, or gain publicity, a la the duke case. it's a touchy topic, and any allegation should be taken seriously, but it's far to easy to make a big story out of a non-story with this stuff.. so just like we shouldn't turn the girl away out of that possibility, we shouldn't hang cousins + teammates before the whole story is known

Due to the fact the Canadian court system won't divulge much we might not ever know what actually happened.

I side with the innocent until proven guilty in a court of law (except in the case of OJ).

I had a guy on my little league team a couple of grades ahead of me - at a kegger, not sure what happened, but long story short, the girl has second thoughts the next couple of days and presses charges. He was basically railroaded and had to spend 8 years in prision.

they wont divulge much, but they'll divulge enough to know whether they're guilty or not.. we may not get a play by play of the night in question, but we'll know if she was lying (innocent), he was a bad person (witness), or he was a scumbag (culprit).

that's the kind of stuff that worries me.. a girl decides she didn't want to do what she did and it's immediately her word against yours. and in today's society, her word wins more often then not. that's why you have to be careful with these cases. you can't throw them out, but you cant assume guys are guilty right away either.
