Very very mild Islanders fan but I don't watch a lot. However I have to ask. Is it normal in the NHL playoffs for all the 1 seeds to lose in the first round ?? I'm guessing not

Not normal at all. First time in history both of the top seeds were bounced in the first round.

I wouldn't call it normal, but I would venture a guess that a one seed losing in the first round happens more frequently in the NHL than in other sports.

Aren't the 3rd and 4th best teams also in danger of losing or already lost as well? Pretty insane

Yeah, very real possibility that 3 out of 4 #1 seeds lose and 3 out of 4 #2 seeds lose.

It might help....I say might, if they seeded the teams 1-8 as they used to. However, there were 8 seeds that advanced before they changed the format. COL d. CGY and CBJ d. TB were essentially both 8 seeds if they were seeded the old way. What if they reseeded the 8 remaining teams after the 1st round 1-8 instead of within conference?

(1)BOS (107) vs (8)COL (90)
(4)CAR (99) vs (5)STL (99)

(2)NYI (103) vs (7)DAL (93)
(3)SJ (101) vs (6)CBJ (98)

-or-

(1)TB (128) vs (16)VGS (93)
(8)TOR (100) vs (9)PIT (100)

(4)WAS (104) vs (13)CBJ (98)
(5)NYI (103) vs (12)STL (99)

(2)CGY (107) vs (15)DAL (93)
(7)NSH (100) VS (10)WPG (99)

(3)BOS (107) VS (14)MTL (96)
(6)SJ (101) VS (11)CAR (99)

Seeds 2-16 are separated by a total of 14 points which equates to 7 games. That's pretty tight. It's anyone's game no matter how they are seeded.
