Derek Jeter doesn't even own the Marlins yet, but he already has informed the team that he plans to fire two special assistants who are in Baseball's Hall of Fame (Andre Dawson and Tony Perez), the manager who led them to the 2003 World Series championship (Jack McKeon) and the player known as Mr. Marlin (Jeff Conine), according to two MLB sources.
And here's the twist: Jeter asked Marlins president David Samson to fire those four Marlins luminaries for him, because Jeter didn't want to do it.
I sent my Jeff Conine rookie card to him at the Marlins office in April to sign it. I also enclosed a small self-addressed stamped envelope so he could mail it back to me. I never got it back, and I guess I never will.
Holy shit, I found one of you!I sent my Jeff Conine rookie card to him at the Marlins office in April to sign it. I also enclosed a small self-addressed stamped envelope so he could mail it back to me. I never got it back, and I guess I never will.

No offense to Tony Perez, but the guy is like 80. Who knows if he was actually doing anything or if he will even remember that he was fired next week. He should be taking his rightful spot sitting behind a card table next to Pete Rose in some dingy casino in Las Vegas, signing baseballs and taking pictures for 15 bucks a pop.....I want to know the reasoning beyond the firing of Dawson and Perez... Does Jeter not like them or something?
