Derek Jeter doesn't even own the Marlins yet, but he already has informed the team that he plans to fire two special assistants who are in Baseball's Hall of Fame (Andre Dawson and Tony Perez), the manager who led them to the 2003 World Series championship (Jack McKeon) and the player known as Mr. Marlin (Jeff Conine), according to two MLB sources.

And here's the twist: Jeter asked Marlins president David Samson to fire those four Marlins luminaries for him, because Jeter didn't want to do it.

I want to know the reasoning beyond the firing of Dawson and Perez... Does Jeter not like them or something?

The funny thing is he's already all but pink-slipped Samson too. Making him do these firings before getting the axe himself. Quality move.

I sent my Jeff Conine rookie card to him at the Marlins office in April to sign it. I also enclosed a small self-addressed stamped envelope so he could mail it back to me. I never got it back, and I guess I never will.

Loria probably took it and sold it on eBay

Not surprising...ball players (especially stars) typically do not make good executives. This is especially true for the day to day business. Jeter wants to own the team, fine. But I don't see him doing any better than the outgoing ownership if he has his hands on the day to say operations.

Andre Dawson dropped a deuce this morning that had more baseball talent than Derek Jeter. What a fuckin shame..

No offense to Tony Perez, but the guy is like 80. Who knows if he was actually doing anything or if he will even remember that he was fired next week. He should be taking his rightful spot sitting behind a card table next to Pete Rose in some dingy casino in Las Vegas, signing baseballs and taking pictures for 15 bucks a pop.....

Interesting news. Got to think Jeter would have waited until officially becoming owner to do these changes.

Incredible play. Made all the more sweet because the Yankees went on to win the world series that year.

Oh. . . wait a second.

Gotta get some Brady highlights from 2007 up in this bitch.
