On the weekend of September 18th -19th the third annual “Husker Fans’ Salute to the Troops” ( - Home) celebration will be held at the Cornhusker Marriott Hotel in Lincoln. Each year veterans from any war, any branch of service and their families are invited to attend this weekend of Husker activities.
On Saturday morning September 18th, Kincaid Motor Coaches will provide buses to take the guests from the Cornhusker Marriott to Memorial Stadium. They will be treated to a tour of the new athletic facility and will get to experience a special Tunnel Walk ceremony. Afterward, buses will bring them back to the hotel.
Many of these troopers are in their mid-20s, but because of their battle experiences, they have seen a great deal in their lives. Saturday afternoon there is a Husker Football Game Watch Party at the hotel. Attendees will watch the Nebraska-Washington football game on several giant TV screens and will be treated to food, beverages and entertainment. (Last year's "Salute" attracted over 300 people.)
On Sunday morning September 19th, there will be a brunch where those outstanding men and women who have served this great country of ours will be honored. This year's featured speaker will be Tyrone Fahie, a current member of the Husker football team. Prior to his walking on at Nebraska, Tyrone completed two tours in Iraq as a member of the Seal Team One team as a support communicator. Husker Assistant, Ron Brown, will provide the invocation.
This year the AdoptaPlatoon organization will be busing about 25 wounded warriors from Ft. Riley, Kansas to Lincoln. They will be honored at a special banquet Friday night, September 17th, at the hotel.
Salute sponsors include David Fiala owner of Futures One, Larry the Cable Guy, Grant Wistrom, Kincaid Motor Coaches, and several anonymous donors. The Salute is a 100% volunteer organization. All the money donated goes directly to honoring our troops. This year’s event is full; registration is closed and it is not open to the public.
The Salute is not open to the public. Media should contact Kenlon Johannes [email protected] to obtain credentials to attend or check in at the event’s registration desk at the Cornhusker Hotel the days of the event. The Wounded Warrior dinner on Friday night is closed to the media and the public. Former Husker football players have been invited to attend any of the Saturday events.

Some History
For the past 7 years, Husker Dan columns appeared regularly on Huskerpedia and are now posted on Huskermax, Husker Dan. About five years ago, Husker Dan's Army (HDA) began as a way of sending Husker Care Packages to our men and women who are deployed in the Middle East. To date, the effort has brought a touch of Nebraska to 100s of troopers. (HuskerVision also sends game day DVDs to those who register with Husker Dan's Army.) HDA led to the creation in 2008 of the "Husker Fans' Salute To The Troops" celebration.
Christian Berkshire, a seven year old boy who lives with his family at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky suffers from a rare and unfortunately, incurable form of cancer that has affected his optic nerve, his brain and spinal column and has left him legally blind. He is a huge Husker football fan. Through the efforts of Grant Wistrom and Salute volunteers enough money has been raised to bring Christian and his family to the event.
