Most Pirate fans who are older than teenagers likely will remember Humberto Cota, a catcher whom the Pirates had high hopes for during the Littlefield regime. Like so many others, Cota never amounted to much and "disappeared" several years ago.
Since Jason Grilli is closing for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic, and Italy just upset Mexico in a first round game, I just checked out the box score..... and discovered that Humberto Cota was the catcher for Mexico. Ali Solis, a catcher acquired by the Pirates during the off-season, was SUPPOSED to be the starting catcher for Mexico in the WBC, before he opted out of the tournament, due to a minor injury. So..... apparently Cota replaced Solis.
In doing a little more research, I discovered that Cota has been playing regulary in the Mexican League for the past 4 years and performing pretty well. Cota just turned 34, by the way.

Note: You may notice a sentence toward the bottom right on that web page which states that the Reds signed Cota to a minor league contract and invited him to big league camp. Apparently, that's an obsolete news item..... which occurred back in 2009.
