somebody on the water cooler asked that question a while back.

I don't think anyone had an answer outside of it being Lane Kiffin manipulating something..

As far as I remember they were given a 2 year bowl ban in June of 2010 amongst forfeiting all wins in games reggie bush played in.my math isn't the greatest but I would think they have 1 more year of ineligibility left.maybe some of those recruits are looking toward the following years.

• A postseason ban in football following the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

A loss of 30 total football scholarships over the 2011, 2012 and 2013 seasons.

• A vacation of all football victories starting in December 2004 and running through the 2005 season. This includes the national championship win over Oklahoma on Jan. 4, 2005.

• All statistics vacated for Bush, Mayo and women’s tennis athlete Gabriela Niculescu in the games which the NCAA deemed them ineligible due to rules violations.

• Bush and Mayo must be disassociated from USC athletics.

• An acceptance of USC’s self-imposed penalties on its basketball program, which included a forfeiture of all wins in 2007-2008 and a one-year postseason ban.

• All titles won during ineligible games must be vacated and trophies and banners must be removed.

• A vacation of wins in the women’s tennis program from May 2006 to May 2009, for long-distance telephone violations committed by a student-athlete.

• A reduction of recruiting days for the men’s basketball program in 2010-2011.

• Four years of probation.

So USC should only have 60 players on scholarship on Feb 3rd or whatever day signing is..

Edit: No that would be wrong as that would apply to any team NOT under penalty..

seems there are some loop holes here, as we can see it really has no effect at all at this point besides the bowl ban

Mandel explains it a little more in the mail bag

SEC BCS dominance killing cyclical theory; more Mailbag - Stewart Mandel - SI.com

Stewart, I was wondering if you could clarify something for me. My understanding was that USC had restrictions on the number of recruits it could take (20, pending its NCAA appeal). However a cursory look at the number of kids planning to commit to USC this coming year shows 23. Am I misunderstanding USC's penalties or have they figured out a way around the recruiting restrictions?
-- Michael, Cleveland

The latter -- though it's perfectly legal and will only work this year. Scholarships are based on the academic calendar, not the football calendar. Because USC only signed 18 players last year, 14 of whom enrolled last fall, it can count its nine early enrollees in the current class toward the 2010-11 school year. Should the original ruling stand, the 15-player limit goes into effect in 2011-12 and will include all players that enroll this fall (which may include some recruited walk-ons). It still can't go over the NCAA-imposed 75-scholarship limit for its overall roster.

So that's how it supposedly works. They lowered there overall limit for 3 years by 10 each year. That will catch up to them...

I wonder how desperate Kiffin will get..

I think it's probably like how most SEC teams do it. They over commit.

It's the same as all the schools that oversign. They'll have to get rid of some players, they'll convince some to transfer, they'll try to greyshirt a couple, etc., etc.

There are loopholes, just ask South Carolina, Bama, Auburn, Florida, Ole Miss, LSU, Arkansas, Miss State, Clemson & Michigan State.

Right.

While not every SEC team does it every year, UGA & Vanderbilt are the only school to publicly denounce oversigning.

It's not completely out of the question yet that SC could have single digit recruiting classes in the future to stay under the season limit sanctions.

If espn would take SEC's cock out of their hand for just one second and report how truly disgusting the whole over signing thing is, maybe, just maybe though, the negative spotlight might curb some of this business. Then maybe someday after that the NCAA will move to ban it all together and finally level the playing field for teams outside of the SEC.

On Feb.4th their should be a national day to recognize the kids that got their ships yanked or were booted out of school completely to the JUCO farm system because they were flat out lied to by their coach and school

It's not just the SEC, there are teams in almost every conference that habitually oversign. The difference is almost every team in the SEC does it, with the exeption of UGA & Vanderbilt.

Follow the link, anyone with an average above 25 oversigns a lot.
