How Do Our Current Players Fit What The New Staff Will Run ??

With the new staff coming in - esp on the defensive side of the ball - what current roster players do you think will benefit most ??

Will Josey Jewell be fit into a similar role as Danny Travathan, with a guy like, for example CJ Mosley coming in as a better fit as the prototypical Fangio LBer ??

How about Justin Simmons ?? .. This guy has all the athletic ability you could want in a safety - yet, he seemed to be lost out there on the field at times .... Could Simmons benefit from a player like Landon Collins coming in ???

I really like Collins, but I don;t know enough about what Fangio runs in a defense

So what players that we already have match what Fangio / Donatell will be implementing ??

To a point, sure. And most definitely at the start. But I think we'll see the following:


1. Power Oline. We've sorta moved that way, but I think you'll see us move away from the Paradis style of player.
2. ILB'er, Jewell has to wonder if his days are numbered. Vic likes speed inside, and we don't have that anywhere. Probably sticks as a ST player and good depth.
3. TE: Probably see new players as much from attrition and injury than scheme.
4. FB: Might see the end of Janovich depending on what our new base sets are on offense.
5. QB: Maybe we'll get one this year, maybe next. But given what our new OC has gotten out of journeymen qb's, I'd say our odds now are smaller that we go all out on a qb this year.
6. Dline, I'll be interested in this, to see if we part ways with Wolfe, Hair-dude, or Harris. I can see us just keeping Harris and Gotsis, and building around FA and the draft.

My guess most of our players we will not sign unless they come cheap That last draft and the OL and DL development late in the year will give the staff huge .

I think we will cut Marshal and Darian Stewart cut

I hope this means that the staff before held him back on sacks because he disappeared the last 2 years.

I think we will find a role for Jewell. It may not be starting but I think he will find a role.

I don't think Jewell is physically capable of filling the same role as Trevathan. I think Jewell lacks the speed, acceleration, and body control to do that. I could see him being a Special Teams ace though with his smarts and his attitude.

Jewell is a unique physical talent. He has to be used in a particular way. I think Fangio will see the talent and find ways to utilize it. The problem for him last year - as a rookie -was the Bronco were often caught in defenses where Jewell had man to man coverage against faster players. Jewell is actually very good in coverage in the short zone where his reflexes make a difference. Good coaches find ways to utilize unique talents. Jewell has that kind of talent and leads emotionally on the field.

It's tough to gauge Jewell also because just about everyone in that defense looked out of position or behind the play at some point .. You look at Justin Simmons who has all the traits you'd want in a safety and he looked lost a lot of the time .. Same for Stewart, Roby, Todd Davis

And I'm not sure it's the best thing to have Chubb dropping into coverage - if nothing else, you're giving up one of your strengths and taking one of the best options at disrupting the play behind the LOS and making him do something that someone should be able to do better ...

That is exactly what Fangio does. He obviously had a ton of talent in Chicago; could've done whatever he wanted. Wasn't the case during his SF stint, but he made it work. Ran a lot of a hybrid "4-3 Under" with the 49ers. I know Fangio likes his players to be extremely versatile, which makes Von Miller a perfect fit. A lot of switching 3-and-5 techs to get favorable match-ups and he likes interchangeable safeties in order to help disguise and switch up coverages.

I am guessing Cravens is cut. He was such a disappointment.
