Nanook of the North
Up way too early for a Sunday morning so I thought I'd gather a few Mariner tidbits:
The Mariner rotation has recorded 8 quality starts this year. Four of them belong to Bryan Woo.
Trent Thornton is having a Dr Jekyl/Mr Hyde type season. He already has 5 holds. He only had 10 all of last year. But he has also already been tagged for 4 homeruns. He only gave up 8 all of last year.
Dylan Moore is second on the team in OPS at .903. But he also leads the team in errors (3) and times caught stealing (4). Moore turns 33 in August and maybe it is time for him to realize that he isn't as fast as he used to be.
Is Mitch Garver suddenly a (gasp!) good luck charm? The Mariners have won the last 7 games in which he has played and 9 out of the last 10. Garver's current .227 batting average is his highest average at any point in his Mariner career (excluding March games).
Good news for Rowdy Tellez: he is on pace for 24 homeruns, which would tie him with Ryon Healy for the most homeruns by a first baseman since Russell Branyon in 2009. Bad news for Rowdy Tellez: the Mariners will not return to Toronto this season.
More Dr Jekyl/Mr Hyde stuff. Julio leads the team in runs scored. He also has the lowest On Base Percentage and OPS of all the starters.
JP Crawford has been on a tear since the recent road trip began on April 15th. He has 5 multi-hit games in that span and has raised his slash from .163/,357/.186/.587 to .263/.398/.325/.723.
Likewise, Luke Raley has seen recent success. He has 8 hits in his last 18 at bats and has raised his batting average by 52 points over that span and his OPS from .587 to .688.
Lastly, Ben Williamson. Helluva revelation. A gutty, hardnosed, team player with a playing style that is built for T-Mobile. We've only seen him in 11 games so far but he already strikes me as a guy destined to be a manager when his playing career is over. His baseball IQ might be second only to Raleigh, on the team.
The Mariners' are 61 games over .500 in the post CoVid era.
