Why don't the poor Giants stop bitching about "defenseless" catchers

...fucking get over it already! :gaah:

It's been two years and I hear they still have a contract out on Scott Cousins. This shit is gettin' old.

And suddenly this is a "major issue" facing MLB, likely to result in a precedent-setting rules change? I call total bullshit.

These situations would be ended if catchers didn't set them self up to be run into...

Exactly. Don't block the plate and you won't get hit.

Have any of you actually seen the Posey play? Cousins had at least half the plate, but chose to aim away from the plate to make a highlight play instead.

Are you all in favor of the 2B or the SS getting bowled over as well? What is the difference?

I have no problem with a hard slide into second base, middle infielders have known their whole life that players are going to come in trying to break up a double play.

I understand the runner had a chance to slide, but Posey set up blocking the plate and didn't move until the runner was more than halfway home. I have no idea what was going through the runners mind and when he realized he could slide into home.

I am not talking "hard slide". I am talking about the runner bowling over the 2B.

Are you OK with this?

And ive never seen a second baseman turn a double play with his body between first and second base. They go behind or in front of the bag

And Posey was on the inside if the plate, exposing the outer half.

Like the kind of play at home in the Posey collision? No. But if the second baseman is standing in between the runner and the base than i dont have a problem with the runner starting his slide into the second baseman. Maybe that makes me a terrible person, but i don't know how else they're getting to second base.

So it is OK to bowl over one player, but not another?

Explain....

He didn't expose the outer half until the runner was half way home. I have no idea if the runner was looking for that, if he had already decided to bowl him over, if he was looking for the ball, or if he just had his head down and was running. Obviously, if the runner can slide thats what you would like, but if he has a split second to make that decision its not always going to turn out well. Im not saying the runner only had a split second, but there will be instances in which a catcher will block the plate a little bit longer than posey did. I think if the throw was good posey would have continued blocking the plate. His back leg slid when he realized the ball was thrown short.

A catcher blocks the plate, a second baseman does not block second base...The runner can get to second base, the second baseman attempts to avoid the runner, every single time they try to turn a double play. Most of the time when a catcher gets run over its because he put himself in that position. If the second baseman is standing in between first and second than start your "slide" early and take him out. I don't think anyone would complain, they would talk about the second baseman being an idiot. Posey didn't try to avoid the runner, second baseman do

I'm mainly just sick of hearing the name "Buster Posey" and being told to believe that he's the best thing since Johnny Bench and that he's an innocent little victim of a violent player.

I don't want to ban home plate collisions, but I have a problem with anyone who 'launches' into the catcher. If they leave their feet, it should be an automatic out.

The Posey play was very borderline, IMO. He was blocking the plate in the most technical of sense, there was plenty of room to slide if Cousins didn't want to run him over.
