I was looking back at the All Century vote totals and realized that Gary Carter didn't even finish in the top 8 for catchers. Talk about severely underrating him. Also Cap Anson not finishing in the top 10 for first basemen, Eddie Collins finishing 6th for 2nd basemen, and Tris Speaker finishing 21st for outfielders (behind Lou Brock).

That's pretty bad.

Not only that...Nolan Ryan got 3x as many votes as Tom Seaver.

Ahh yes, the basis for the "Nolan Ryan is the most overrated pitcher of all time" mantra. Although I think Sandy Koufax may have surpassed him.

What a terrible job the voters did with pitchers. Dennis Eckersley finished with more votes than Lefty Grove.

Excluding his first 2 years where he was a Sept callup and his last season where he was washed up at age 45, Fisk had 6 other years where he played less than 100 games...3 were with Boston and 3 were with Chicago.

Fisk averaged 118 games with Boston in his 8 seasons as an everyday player, and just twice in those 8 seasons he played more than 135 games...how do we conclude he was abused from that?

After doing some websurfing I have to conclude that Zimmer wasn't quite as hard on Fisk as I thought he had been.

Zimmer was, despite that, an atrocious manager who made very poor use of his bench and was TERRIBLE at evaluating pitching ability. And let personal hostility toward individual players mess up his lineup decisions more than any other Red Sox manager in my 40 years of living in Boston.

Thank you and :L

I wonder how different that poll would be today with the general publics feelings toward steroids. McGwire #2 for first basemen
Yeah this poll was taken at the height of McGwire's popularity. It was still pretty absurd to think he was the 2nd greatest first baseman of all time, even at that time.
