6/29/2016: Signed a six-year, $139.125 million contract. The deal contains $87 million guaranteed, including a $32 million signing bonus. 2016: $12 million, 2017: $7 million (+ $6 million roster bonus), 2018: $12 million (+ $6 million roster bonus), 2019: $9.125 million (+ $12 million roster bonus), 2020: $11 million (+ $11 million roster bonus), 2021: $11 million (+ $10 million roster bonus), 2022: Free Agent

Shark, does the full signing bonus go against this years cap?
If cut in 2018 how much dead cap space go's against the Colts.

The fully guaranteed $47M gets spread over the first five years of the deal for cap purposes.

It got spread as such

$32M signing bonus or $6.5M a year against the cap from 2016-2020
$12M Base of 2016 Fully guaranteed
$3M of 2017 is fully guaranteed

So thats his 100% fully guaranteed money. 32+12+3=47

Now he has another $25M that will become fully guaranteed provided he is still on roster on the 5th day of the 2017 league year, but there is no word HOw they are going to vest that. So until that vests I cant figure out what cutting him would really cost them. Talk to me in six weeks when they post the vested totals and where that $25M goes.

Side note, my guess is the $25M will vest as signing bonus over the 2017-2012 seasons, with a part being made guaranteed salary.

So if they make the other $4M of 2017 base as guaranteed, it doesnt change the cap number for that year. Leaves $21M to spread over the next five years.

So it would make his bonus prorate for 2017-2020 go up by 4.2M a year.

If they did that, cutting him in 18 would cause a cap hit of $7.4M (negative money) and leave them with $67M in cap space.

or they hold him and ride it out, if cut in 2019 at that point, they would save $14m but have $12M in dead money on the books for him and about $133M in cap space... so figure in 19 if they had to cut him, after player adds and such between now and then, they would still have $60M or so in cap space would be my guess.

Snagged frpom Shark when he posted it recently and it goes more in-depth about the details of the 87 million than anything elsae I've seen. Everything else I've seen makes it appear as if Luck is guaranteed 87 million STOP: END OF STORY. The info in the link below says something different. Very different imo.

NO mistake, if Luck plays out this contract he will be a very wealthy man, not Trump or Hillary or J-Zee wealthy.... But by NFL standards.. boy got hooked up.

But teams have gotten smarter since the 90's and the league as a whole is making money hand over fist. They learned that having half the league cutting players for cap purposes is not good for business. Its why they agreed to the new cap structure and having cap roll over for space you didnt use. All contracts have out clauses in them now, and you wont see teams keeping guys because thier numbers make it overly prohibitive to get rid of guy who isnt producing. They also didnt want free agency to be limited to only the crappy teams with alot of cap space. So now for the most part, every one gets to shop. in 2018, the team with the lowest projected cap space also has 49 players on contract for that year. And no one is projected to be over the cap in 2018 as of right now.

Bottom line is, this aint the NFL of the 1990's no more.

That's why I'm not gonna nut up or trip about the 80 million dollar number that Jones put in the atmosphere.

the more and more I think about it, this deal is probably more likely going to be surpassed by Ryan first.
I believe Cousins would settle for something over 120 million for 5 years. Cousins has been VERY careful about his desires or loyalties to where he plays in 2017. I do think market value and nothing record breaking will be enough to keep Cousins. However --- he also has said he has FULL trust in his agent too, haha.
