Rumors are Idris Elba will be announced as the new Superman shortly.

You were joking, but Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. is seriously considering Michael B. Jordan (Human Torch on the Fant4stic Fantastic Four reboot and Killmonger on Black Panther) to replace Henry Cavill as Superman, and fanshops are already coming out on the Internet:

Tatiana Siegel, the journalist who broke the original Hollywood Reporter story, is saying on Twitter that the situation is closer to Warner Bros. firing Henry Cavill than Henry Cavill quitting:

Tatiana Siegel said:
As for who broke up with whom, Warner Bros. was the one who decided to move on from Henry Cavill

There's a rumor going around that this whole THR story is just a negotiation tactic. But there's two mutually contradictory variants of this rumor:

-One version says that Warner Bros. deliberately leaked the story to THR as a negotiation tactic (to show Henry Cavill that they are willing to stomach the fan outcry/outrage of replacing him, so that his demands for more money are pointless).

-The other version says that Henry Cavill's camp deliberately leaked the story to THR as a negotiation tactic (to raise fan outcry/outrage so that Warner Bros. will pay him more money).

Since these two variations are contradictory, you'll have to decide which one, if either, to believe. :noidea:

Yeah I read there are scheduling conflicts along with Henry focusing on his work with Netflix with the new Witcher series that is coming out. I also read that Ben Afleck might be moving on from batman at some point too. It is crazy how quick these DC actors move on once they get more work. Marvel kept every single one of their employees.

Marvel has had to do a few recasts. Bruce Banner and Rhodes have both been recast.

I actually thought Cavill sucked as Superman so I view just about anyone as an upgrade. Particularly his portrayal of Clark Kent was bad.

Was it the portrayal or the writing of the character?

Fair question, I am not sure.

The reason i ask is another character in that movie: Spacey's portrayal of Lex Luthor.

After seeing the Usual Suspects I was OBSESSED with Spacey playing Lex in the next Superman movie. When it was announced, I coudn't have been happier with the selection (and frankly, I like the idea of "unknown" Routh types playing Superman...it's just such a HUGE role), but the way they wrote it was to campy and cartoonish...BUT I admit that it makes sense since he was supposed to be essentially replacing the 70s/80s Hackman character.

But that wasn't where his strengths were.

To be fair, the Routh flick was SUPPOSED to be a replacement Superman 3. It was not a reboot, it was a retcon.

wow.

DC has done this before.

Just pretend that X movies never happened.

Again, that is what they are doing with BvS here.

Wasnt there some kind of rights that were bought out from someone else that did the hulk movie which led to the recast? Because the hulk today looks nothing like the hulk in the stand alone movies

Shoulda done it before JL so we didn't have to look at his obviously CGI'ed face the last 3rd of the movie. That was incredibly distracting, IMO.

There were 2 stand alone Hulk movies, but they were not connected to each other. The Ed Norton flick was the second MCU movie following Iron Man. It was created by Sony with some back-room agreements between Marvel and Sony, but I am not sure the extent of those deals. From what I remember, Norton wanted script approval and some serious power in the first Avengers movie, so they kicked him to the curb in favor of Ruffalo.

Screw Ed Norton, Mark Ruffalo is much better.

Michael Rosenbaum nailed Lex Luthor perfectly IMO. LL should be a brilliant, arrogant Alpha who can't stand the thought of another man he can never compare to. It makes no sense to portray him as a grumpy old guy

I agree, but I actually think that Lex nailed it in other ways too.

Lex isn't necessarily a "bad" guy.

In some ways you can argue he's a tragic hero.

I love his eerily ominous new interpretation of the cave paintings in smallville. It shows exactly how he ends up seeing himself a decade later against Superman.

Not to mention it's his drive and curious for the truth, for knowledge, that also does him in on Smallville. It's a ferocious appetite for learning at its core.

Not to mention he fights the battle so fiercely to not become his father, that he becomes his father because of it.

It has been a few years since I watched Smallville, but didn’t Lex flat out say at one point that a true hero needed a foil to become truly great, and he was willing to be Clark’s foil to push him to his destiny?

He did in the series finale i believe.

It was a FANTASTIC speech.

My biggest issue with it was it compeltely undid the first 7 seasons of Lex.

At the end of season 7, after he found the fortress, he told clark that he would've protected him had he just told him the truth. Because lex really did see him as a brother.

yes would lex have probably asked for some shady favors? sure. Not like clark hasn't asked lex for 50k in cash before or anything...but until that series finale, you could reasonably believe that Clark's secret really crushed lex and pushed him over the edge.

But they also had all that bs with Lana to really mess up their friendship as well. That was just a terrible idea all around.
