Danielle Hunter just got a 1 year extension making him the second highest paid DE at 35.5 million.

I say, if possible, give Hendrickson a 2 year extension for $72 million ($36 million a year), but you are keeping the current year in play, but you are front loading the 72 million with bonus and guarantees to spread over the 3 years to make it more cap friendly. Trey gets his security and money (making him the 2nd highest paid DE in the NFL), and we get Trey for 3 years with this year's discounted value helping offset his new extension cost over the life of the contract. Plus, it is only 3 more years total, so he will be right there at that breaking point probably. His production probably falls off a bit that last year of the deal, but not so much you are sitting here thinking, damn it, Trey and his salary are killing us.

Agreed. Goodberry touches on this - you can front load this contract a bit with bonus, give him a 3 years with no guarantees, and basically make this another 1 year extension with a team option for year 3 that allows the bonus to be stretched out. He's already owed $16M this year, so if they give him $72 total, $16 of that is already accounted for this year...so, only another $16 this year to reach 32, and then the 3rd year for the cap stretch.

I doubt he would be willing to give up on the last years value. He will almost assuredly want the guarantee to be high enough to where the last year can be voidable, but it is going to cost the Bengals a ton in cap. He was paid so little for his production the last 4 years that he is going to want to make up for that some on his next contract. Losing a year would not help him other than give him some extra money this year.

With 1-year and $18.6M remaining on Trey's current deal, you could add another year at $35.5M and it would only be a total of 2-years for $27M per year (cap dollars).Add a void year or two and turn that cap number way down. You could easily manage this.

Maybe, but he has to realize, Garrett was under contract for 2 more years...this new one was a 1 year extension - and in year "3" of that deal, he'll be turning 33...

Reality is - the Bengals own his rights, and he can threaten to sit out - but he's going to be 31 this season - and missing a full year (or even a partial) is going to do a lot worse to Trey both physically and in the bank account, than agreeing to get paid again for this year AND next (which would be guaranteed). It's year 3 that would not.

At some point - Trey needs to realize that he can't just request upgrades in pay every year without accepting that a back year contract add might be a cut point for the team. It's a bit of quid-pro-quo.

Yeah, I see Trey telling the Bengals to get real with that offer.

$18.6 + $72 = $90.6 Signing Bonus of $15 million - Guarantee of $60 million + Roster Bonus of $5 million in Year 2

Year 1 = $23.6 million ($38.6 million in first year money)
Year 2 = $24 million + $5 million dollar Roster Bonus ($29 million second year)
Year 3 = $23 million

That gives Trey the security he really wants and I believe makes it affordable for the Bengals, and makes him the 2nd highest paid DE in the NFL with that new contract.

Then, if the Bengals have to cut ways with Trey in year 3, he still counts 12 million against the cap, but the Bengals save 11 million in cap space also.

I don't know that it works because the new deal gives the DE a 35.5 AAV...this gives Trey $30 AAV.

Goodberry is usually pretty good with cap/contract stuff - one of the reasons I like to follow him. I think his route is more plausible - and while tweeks may need to be made, there also has to be some concessions from Trey but I don't see him dropping down to $30AAV. He'll either get $35, or $36...his concession will be not trying to match Garrett's 40AAV.

The new contract is for 2 years 72 million, not 3 for 90.6. He has to live with his current year with the EXTENSION.

The difference is, we can spread the new contract over the current year, giving him money up front from the signing bonus.

When the NFL reports the contract, it will be reported as $36 million a year, making him the second highest paid DE in the NFL.

With the guarantee of $60 million out of the $72, it forces the Bengals to at the very minimum hold on to him for year 2, if that happens, his roster bonus kicks in and he will be guaranteed $78.6 million between this year and next if the Bengals decide to cut him year 3 and save $11 million.

This is exactly how this works.

Also, it is reported the Bengals still after the Jamarr and Tee contracts, they still have almost $25 to 30 million in cap space. This contract I am suggesting makes Trey happy, doesn't put too much stress on the Bengals financially, gives them an out in year 3 without Trey sacrificing much of his new extension. Plus, it only adds $5 million to this years cap number. Which gives the Bengals $20-$25 million still available in cap space to sign a veteran guard like Schreff, Jenkins or Hernandez.

With that said, Bengals hosting interior offensive lineman today.

I saw this...prefer scherf...

Sadly, even though his pass block stats weren't great, he's still worlds better than Volson/Cappa - and at the very least, despite pressures and win rate not being solid, he didn't give up any direct sacks ... lol

I mean - at this point, just about anyone is an upgrade over Volson and Cappa - so, even guys who weren't good last year are better...and better is still better...even if it's not good...

Sad, but true tale of Bengals IOL dealings. Makes me think they could trade back in round 1 grab a 3rd rounder...take an OL, and even trade back in round 2 and try and grab another late 3rd, or more likely a 4th...and start filling those positions...almost has to be the way forward.

I don't know who else is out there as far as DT's go, or DE's...may end up in an area where they have to just sign a DT or DE, and while they may draft 1, or the other, this year - IOL will take front in center in the early rounds in some shape.

Another good point by Goodberry - while Patrick was better last year, it was a pretty solid jump from the 2 years before. Sometimes you see declines over the years, like Cappa. Sometimes you see an outlier spike (and have to do more research on why, what it scheme, coaching, injury, etc), and others you can see improvements, even if small...

Would you look at that?? Volson does nothing but improve from year to year. That dude is on an uphill trajectory.

Though, to be fair to Ford - I'm willing to bet that last year included a fair amount of LT play from Ford, which we all know he's not...but was serviceable in a real pinch. Guessing his IOL grade would be higher if it were just factored in his play as a Guard.

Verified - Ford's numbers are ALL snaps...so...I think his grade would likely be more in line with last years' if it were just based on IOL snaps...I'm still sad...just not as sad...lol

I like having Ford as the extra offensive linemen. It's rare to find a guy that can play every position but center, but that's what he does. Is he great at it? Not really - But he's a gamer and he holds up enough to not kill you. Just what you need if one of your guys goes out during the game. But we need to raise the floor of the line.... Just not sure that this dude from the Saints does that. Can we just sign Scherff and get a high draft pick? Maybe add one more vet project to round it out?
