I agree with everything awaz has said from my experiences here in Pittsburgh. I am not surprised. He did go the greatest university on the planet.

The Pens arent keeping the blue jerseys from THE OTHER Winter Classic they had? I am guessing they'll use those powder blue jerseys with the Rangers style name going down it.

No idea about the Caps.

And the WC logo is solid. Not a fan of the scarf wearing Pen.

i do think that the fact that the pens are a young, successful, good looking squad has helped to facilitate the female following, however that is also a very pittsburgh thing. pittsburgh females are much more into sports than say...new york females. it's part of our upbringing...however, what STARTED as a mere interest because everyone else is, or because sid's hot, has become a real fan-ship. and also, the pens fan base is MUCH younger than most. the core of the following is 20-somethings that have been fans since jagr, and normally the boyfriends bring their girlfriends, and BAM new fan.

I think that is one of the coolest factors about the new group of Pens fans. I was lucky/unlucky enough to be alive for the pre-mario years, and when Supah was finally delivered many, many moons ago, he brought along a new contingent of hockey fans in Pittsburgh. That, of course, only grew and grew with the success that the early 90's pens enjoyed.

Of course, that fan following eventually waned. Particularly after the horrible drama that ensued after Jagr left, and the team was stripped down to nothing.... that type of reaction was to be expected, though. Mario was prematurely taken away from the game, and you compound that by the fact that the franchise was completely in shambles in the wake of his retirement/battle with cancer. The team had gone from a Ferrari to a Yugo in the blink of an eye.

When Sid and Geno were delivered in the wake of the lock-out, it re-ignited fans that had been in their 20's during the Mario years. Now, a lot of those fans have children, and subsequently they've been added to the fan-base. Plus, Pittsburgh has changed greatly since the cup win in '92'. Industry and business that had never been there, was suddenly present... particularly in education and medicine.

New fans were bound to become attached to them. Compound that by the fact that the Penguins three or four best players are in their early twenties, a lot of youth can relate to them. It's easy to see why there are so many young Penguin fans.

With all this talk about fanbases I can only think about the atmosphere of the Wach/Well which is making me hockey horny and I now have to wait 3 more months to get this high I am now craving.

I think they must be blind because no one on the Pens roster is good looking, least of all Kris "shit-eating grin" Letang. But yes, girls here are more likely to be sports fans.

i personally like it. It was the original logo of the franchise, and it speaks to the past of the team. It may not be 'cool' in today's world, but that can be said about many things from history.

evolver, i agree, center is my ALL TIME favorite. however, i think, based on the fact that they're going to wear the powder blues as their alternates, and the symbol, it looks like they're basically doing the SAME uniform, just a little earlier. maybe they'll do the powder blue diagonals (someone mentioned those)
