one more from Boudreau:
(outdoor practice in front of a bunch of kids watching)

"Come on you shit-bums, do it right!"

and MAF, during Pens practice to the forwards
"Fuck off, you bitches"
"come on you fucking fuckface!"

During the game:
not too impressed with 87 bitching at the ref for the penalty shot.
Not surprised either, though. good for the ref for giving it right back.

Certainly not surprised to see why everyone (refs included) hate Cooke.
Pretty cute with the bespoke suit on his kid though.

What a phenomenal documentary.
also.... Man, I hope these two teams meet in the playoffs.

It's because of these new insights into players personalities, views on what we THINK they're like, how they act at home with family compared to at the rink, that should make this a yearly documentary. This was 200x's better than the NFL Hardknocks version. I wanna be surprised by the players that are the funny guys in the lockerroom in Philly, or see the other side of an enforcer in NY or something...they can't NOT do this again.

It should have been a penalty shot. Stamkos was awarded one last night from a play that was pretty weak.... if that call warranted a PS, then the one last week on Crosby definitely did.

So wait....

Since Stamkos was given a penalty shot on a weak weak weak call, everyone should get it?

I would think it would be better that we debate whether or not Stamkos deserved one (he didn't). Crosby didn't either.

Sid was hauled down from behind with a caps players' gloves (green) on both of his shoulders pulling him down to the ice.

If that play warranted a penalty, obviously there was something wrong with what he did. I think it deserved a PS. He would have been in alone on Varly. But, you aren't going to see it my way, and I'm certainly not going to see it your way.

I would have to see the replay again, but I do know that my initial reaction and the times i watched the highlights, a PS never came to mind, just a really good penalty for Green to take.

It doesn't matter, now. The reason I replied to the above comment is because I don't really see why what Sid did was wrong. He protested a non-call.

It seems like when Sid protests a call, it gets everyone up in arms. When player X from team Y does it, (meaning anyone else) nobody gives a shit. The double standard is annoying and sounds like little kids crying in the sand box.

I don't think it was the complaining as much as the way he did it, and the way he did it in the game earlier, and i think some of the whining that Cooke did may bleed over into some people perceptions of Crosby, fwiw.

frankly, it doesn't matter whether it should have been a PS or not.
He wasn't free and clear, but he had a step... so that's a subjective call for the ref to make.

For me, it wasn't THAT he questioned the call, it was HOW he whined.
I just found he and Cooke both pretty disrespectful to the refs. Doesn't surprise me with 24, but it kind of did for 87.

People are gonna mention it, because for once you can see and hear the interchange. This obviously happens with a lot of players because the refs are certainly prepared for it and seem used to dealing with complaining and f-bombs. I see evolver's point however, because this season, more than ever before, they're calling shots on REALLY weak plays, and even Sid said "Because I've watched 80 f**king games this year, and nearly every time that's a penalty shot." He has a point you know. I feel like refs have been told to call them a bit more this year than previously because it's more exciting.

How is he supposed to do it? Is there some kind of protocol how you are supposed to protest a call? In reality, anytime Sid complains to the refs, it's going to piss opposing fans off. It's the nature of Crosby and his overall dislike that other fans have of him.

Another interesting factor: both were heated rival games, I'd like to hear some of the convos he had with refs in non-Caps games. I don't like hearing it, but he's a respectable guy off the ice and does his part in the community, so, I still have respect for him.

I am not a Sid hater and have shown that in the past. His mannerism (however common it may be) in that instance came off that way, especially with the throw away "and that was a hook back there" thing at the end, and the whining in the other caps-pens game et al. maybe it was selective editing. We did not see much of Crosby getting called and just going to the box, or hear a whole lot more of his on ice interactions that may have weathered it...i dont know....

For the most part he goes to the box quietly when he knows it was legitimate. I even saw somewhere about Sid complaining to the media (HAHAH, that's happened maybe once) but in the lockerroom all he said was "I just turned and got hit, didn't have the puck or anything *shrug*"

I REALLY don't want to turn this into a Sid v OV thing (REALLY!!), but this is the only example I can think from the show.

- early in the game, the ref told OV "you can run around all game, but you can't leave your feet. you left your feet" not a word in response
- with the Pens no goal "Hey that should be a fucking penalty!!" and that was the end of it
- with the Caps no goal "I stopped, I didn't hit him" Ref "I can either give you a penalty, or call it no goal" that was the end of it.

possible HBO editing, but I doubt they cut any response out if it was interesting

like I said originally, it surprised me with 87, because I thought he had grown out of that.
So I wasn't out looking for negative things to find. Just a comment on the show.
And I understand you protecting your boy, because I'd do the same (and have for Burrows/Kesler).

absolutely. with respect.
I have been captain / alternate on hockey teams since I was about 12 years old, and that is DRILLED into you at every level growing up.
you can talk to the refs, you can argue a call, yes you can even swear (most of the time). underneath it all is respect for his position. always.

It is irritating to hear people whine about him. If Crosby doesn't agree with a call or non-call, it's well within his right to protest it. He, more than anyone else on the Penguins roster has earned that right because he is the captain of the team.

Back in his younger days with the club, yes, his whining was over the top. He wasn't a captain, let alone a veteran of the league. At this point in time, it's his duty to stand up for himself and his teammates when it comes to officiating.

During the whole HBO 24/7, I heard more swearing between the refs and players than I ever imagined I'd hear. So let's stop pretending that these are gentlemanly discussions, and the disagreements that occur between the two are going to be chummy and happy.

They're not, and they won't.

I think this is the key point.

And for the record, I've actually defended Crosby not being a "whiner" back in the Swamp on several occasions b/c personally, I think that's part of a captain's job. If refs often "even up" penalties during a game, letting them know you are not happy helps this happen. My view of him didn't change much from what I thought of him before the series - he's a captain doing his job.

BUT, I think if you watch the Pens-Caps game in episode #3 there was a GREAT example of where this perception may come from. Crosby was high-sticked and there was no call and Ovechkin was whistled for a tripping penalty that clearly was not. Ovechkin was pissed and cussed at the refs as he angrily looped prior to going in the box - it was loud, snarling, and masculine. Crosby was pissed and cussed at the refs, but he had a sad sack look on his face and his voice had a "whiney" tone to it and even cracked as he talked.

I think 46 is right... it's more the way he operates that earned him that rep. than him doing things much different from many other NHLers.
