So my dad, who knows more about baseball trivia than all of us put together, just read Hank Aaron's book. He started out on a ***** League team, the Indianapolis Clowns (ugh).

He said one night they were eating dinner at a Washington DC restaurant and they could hear them smashing all the plates the players used (because they were black). And people wonder why black people are still a little chippy.

So apparently 2 major league teams offered him a contract, the Braves and the Giants. The Braves offered $50/month more, so he played there. If the Giants had bid a little more he would have been Willie Mays' teammate. Think that team would have won a little bit?

The game has certainly changed a bit since...

What an amazing team that would have been. Imagine an outfield of Aaron, Mays and Cepeda, with McCovey at 1st base in 1960.

The problem of course is how things would have gone if you change something. Do they even get McCovey or Cepeda if they have Aaron? Who knows? Just fun to think about.

Well, yea. That’s a pretty big butterfly.

It is hard to know but consider that McCovey was signed in March 1955, less than a year after Aaron's big league debut. Cepeda was signed sometime during that same offseason (unsure when but before the 1955 season started). I would guess that Aaron's place on the Giants would probably have not changed either signings but there is no definitive way to know.

I once heard that the Braves offered Mays but were beat out by 15k so they weren’t about to let another ***** players slip away
