I don't think they can collect on an insurance policy because Watson is training and rehabbing his injury and there has been no ruling that he did something during his rehab to break his deal. They'll have to keep him, but they can store him on IR because he won't be ready to play.

I think they will start Flacco to begin the season. I think they'll get rid of Pickett - No real reason to keep him.
A lot of reports I keep reading is the Browns are more than likely going to recoup almost $60 million in insurance policy. I am not sure how that affects the cap, but he is going to go on the IR, he will not count against the roster, and the Browns will recoup nearly $60 million if he stays there, with an injury that is fully expected to take a year to recover, regardless of the new techniques they have found to speed up healing on that surgery. Do you think the Browns will let him see the roster outside the IR? I don't.

If I was the Browns, you go with youth here. Bother Sanders and Gabriel have potential. Pickett is at least as good as Flacco and certainly more mobile and durable. I would run with Pickett and the rookie QB that picks up the most in training camp and the offseason becomes my #2. Worst case scenario, they are tanking for Arch Manning next year.

I think if they IR him the entire year, they can get insurance on that - but he has to miss the year 1st, so it doesn't help leading up to the season. To get out from under the entire contract, he would have to be medically retired...again, I *THINK*...

Was talking to my buddy the other day, who is a Cleveland guy - and he has a deep worry that Flacco ends up getting screwed over and cut. Pickett is a 2 year deal, and Gabriel is a 3rd round pick. Sanders would be option 1B to cut simply because you can more afford to cut a 5th rounder than a 3rd rounder...but either way, you have 2 rookie QB's that play vastly different style of games. The offense is going to be tailored one way, and whichever way they go, one of them is going to be the odd-man out.

He also has no idea what the plan was once they took Sanders because - at least with Gabriel, you have a future backup on the roster. Next year, after a likely down year, you get another crack at landing a much better QB. Pickett maybe comes back for year 2, Flacco retires, and your new rookie sits at #2 for a few weeks, and eventually takes over. After that, your rookie is #1, Gabriel is your #2, and you end up drafting another kid in rounds 5-6-7 to be your 3rd QB/emergency backup. The plan was in place - and then they took Sanders. Haslam really cannot help himself when it comes to interjecting his wants onto the team - even when the staff does not agree. He gets an "A" for caring, but an "F" in execution...lol

He also said - don't forget - it is the Browns. Carrying 4 QB's on the roster can't be counted out (with Watson on IR)...lol

Issue here is - you have 4 QB's (5 with Watson) and only 2 or 3 of them can really play in the current offense. Odd man out? Sanders. His best fit was an offense like Miami with 2 stud WR's who have high YAC. Cleveland is far from that from under Watson, to Flacco and even with Pickett and Gabriel. The offense really isn't tailored to either rookie, but if you had to lean one way - Gabriel would be the better fit (not saying better QB, saying better fit). Sanders requires a very specific offense, IMO - on predicated on many short throws, and very little reads. Not sure that meshes well here...but it's going to be fascinating to watch.
