This whole loading phase after you've inserted the disc is just ridiculous.

You buy a CD game. put it into the console and it takes an hour before you can even play the dang thing. I bought the CD for a reason. So I can put it into the console and play right away. If I wanted to wait around for the download I would have downloaded the game from the network.

I am seriously going on 20 minutes waiting for a game I just purchased to "load".

Which new generation consoles use CDs? Maybe that's the problem. It's an older technology.

On the xbox one, I just install from the DVD to the HDD, then everything is fast. I have a couple that I purchased through xbox live, which don't need the DVD at all.

I stopped buying hard copies for PS4 games after I realized it was going to install 25+ GBs of shit on the hard drive no matter what.

The install from disc isn't so bad. What's really annoying is the "this game needs an update" messages that happen every couple of weeks or so. If you're like me and don't have the fastest internet options in your area, you can be stuck waiting an hour+ depending on the file size of the update.

I'm with the crew that doesn't bother with discs anymore.

My gripe for the xbox 1 is that the dashboard is still awful. i know it's improved since the big update, but it's still sluggish and oftentimes nonsensical. i don't understand how the 360 could be so fast with making parties and joining friends in games, and on the next gen console, it's just a big headache.

PS4/Xbox 1 worth it? I'm still rocking the PS3 and 360 myself.

I found this same issue with FO4 on the PC. I bought the game, but still had to DL it through Stream. Also, when I play, I need to be logged into Stream, and this is a single player game.

Irritates the hell out of me.

Depends on what you play. If you like newer titles like Halo 5 or Uncharted 4, yes. If you're just a casual gamer that for example just plays Madden ever now and then, not really. But now would be a good time to jump in if you're thinking about it. Most of the holiday bundle deals (some really good ones too) run out January 1st so there's still time

They have pre-loading capabilities now (like PC games). Download the game a week in advance of its release date and play it at 12:01 the day it releases. Or, if its an EA game and you have a X1 (w/EA Access), you can play it for 10hrs total a week before it releases.

I'm not sure why they didn't put SSDs into the new consoles. Part of the problem with that is that you're loading onto a traditional hard drive which takes forever. Stupid. There really is no point to the discs at this point -- other than it allows you to bring the game elsewhere. But it's not like the old days because if you did bring it to a friends house, you'd have to wait an hour to play it, then update it. And after all the installing, you still need the damn disc to play the game. WHY?

SSDs cost too much per unit. That would up the price of each console unit by $100-$150 atleast.

The PS4's hardware and apps work a lot better than the XBOX 1. I've never had an app crash on my PS4 but they do on my XB1 pretty regularly. It's also kind of troubling how often I have to give the XB1 a hard reset lately. Sometimes I can't even use the home button on my controller to turn the damn thing off and somehow the rest of the buttons function okay until I give it a hard reset.

The older they get the PS4 seems like the better console overall even if it doesn't have as many apps.

They can say that but to a manufacturer the difference has to be negligible. They usually lose money on the console anyway. How silly is it going to be in 5 years when these are still the consoles and neither of them has a solid state drive? They were underpowered from the start.

I mostly stopped buying disc's too, but will take the initial download time over the constant wait screens that they would have running games that size off a disc.

Same with the updates, I usually put my PS3 in the low power/sleep mode where it will update games if they need it, and since you are going to have more bugs with bigger games today, it's nice to start it up and see some of them have been fixed.

Only time I buy discs is because you can usually get certain titles super cheap on Ebay (even brand new).

Think I got Until Dawn 1 month after it was out for like $20 while it was still $40-50 on Amazon.

But yah, discs/game packages are a thing of the past. I build my own PCs and haven't even had a DVD/Blu-Ray drive over the last 6 years. USB installed my last 2 operating systems in Windows 7/10 and Steam releases basically everything these days with a brilliant interface and constant sales/deals.

SSDs probably will be the norm next gen along with limited physical distribution of the software i.e all digital.

Yeah. I'm hoping the next gen will all be streaming devices. IE -- servers house the games and you just connect to those servers to play. When you "buy" a game, you're just buying access. Of course, this depends on internet speed increasing with the upgrade. But that would mean that "consoles" no longer need to have processing equipment. They simply just connect to main servers which have all that gear in them and do it for you. That way they can be upgraded and nothing has to happen on your end. But given how they develop these things I doubt we'll see something that innovative in the next round.

I think you hit it right on the head. Streaming is/will be the next gen, but I'm not sure they'll be "devices". I personally see the next gen console as basically a Wifi USB type device that controller/multiple controllers can be tethered to. I guess you could call that a device, but certainly not a "console" :suds:
