Deadspin posted what I thought is a great article about Doc Emrick. They really hit the nail on the head when they talk about his understanding of the flow of the game and how he can capture the excitement.

Why Mike Emrick Is The Best

I enjoyed the read and think Doc Emrick does a great job as a play-by-play man. He won an Emmy this year for his work.

This is not directed at Sly or Orko, but in my experience, hockey message boards are huge complaining grounds for broadcast crews. Every network/anchor typically gets panned.

I think he knows his stuff and has great hockey knowledge, buthe is way too fucking boring. He adds no life to the commentary. I would rather listen to nothing.

this is true

Ive taken my fair share of shots at Bob Cole the past couple of years (questioning his knowledge and senility for that matter) but he was really good this playoff season especially last round

He didnt really have good player identification ("and now here comes Boston up ice ... look at em ... 4 of em" - lol) but his calls were massive ... well done Colesy

I think he does a good job varying his timbre, pitch, and volume. I find him pretty exciting - he has this old school radio guy vibe to him. I miss the voice of Gary Thorne, but I enjoy Emrick.

It's too bad Joe B. (Caps' guy) got let go from Versus, I think he is one of the best. Guys' vocab. in describing the game is second to none.

I still think he's a shadow of his former self (sorry Bob, but it's time to hang up the mic). Danny Gallivan walked away because he thought his play-by-play work was slipping (I didn't think so, but hey Danny knew better than me) and it makes me a little sad when I see all the criticism directed Bob's way because for so long, he was great to listen to.

I agree dash. Bob Cole was a great HOF announcer for a lot of years but he really needs to be put out to pasture (probably should have left when his partner Harry Neal did). I honestly have a hard time listening to him these days and will usually watch the Versus or NBC broadcast with Emrick instead. I do like Jim Hughson, though. He keeps it pretty impartial and doesn't miss much.

I agree. I enjoy listening to Doc call games. It's the other 2 douchebags that are usually with him that I cannot stand, although Edzo doesn't bother me as much as he used too, and not nearly as much as Pee-air does...

Have you guys noticed that for the most part, Ex players, coaches and GM's that were mediocre go into broadcasting and analysis? Pierre McGuire, Milbury, Kieth Jones, etc. CBC has Glen Healy. Over at ESPN, the real idiots, of course in Barnaby and Melrose.
Baseball does it some, too but not as much as the NHL. Actually, the NBA seems to get more HOF'ers and really knowledgeable guys than most.

Is there anyone more 'Captain Obvious' than Glenn Healy on HNIC?!? Not only that, but he repeats his commentary from previous games. He's terrible.

"Sedins cant get in the flow of the game with all these penalties"

yada yada yada blah blah blah

I like Doc for the most part, and Joe Bennanati, although JB tends to show his true colors when he calls games involving the Caps, which is fine, when you call all of their games it happens. Still miss the dynamic duo of Thorne and Clement, mostly because my childhood memories of games involve their call. Still though, every announcer has their issues, just gotta find a good team of guys, or it won't work.

Really? I'm used to local broadcasts where Joe B. is extremely impartial to counter the rampant homerism of Craig Laughlin.

It's not constant, but there's a definite difference in tone when calling a Caps goal v. opponents goal. Not all the time, but just noticeable. Not a big deal really...impartial with most everything else.

Oh yeah, that makes sense. He has to sell up the home goals for the local Comcast broadcast, so it probably just carries over. He's very good though, unlike the Caps' radio guy Steve Kolbe who often broadcasts like this:

"Alex Semin carries the puck into the zone along the wing on a 3-on-2 for the Caps. Semin has just 2 goals in his last 16 games right now, definitely in a bit of slump. And the Islanders push the puck up the boards and dump it in."

So annoying. I won't even listen anymore. I'll just hit refresh for the score on my phone.

Nothing I hate more *coughSTEIGGYDOESTHISTOOcough* than a pxp man trying to be a color man. Your job as a play by play announcer is to *gasp!* call the play as it happens. Don't "spice it up" when you don't have to, just CALL THE PLAY.
