Good interview with SM on that clip (except for the fact that it is conducted by L. Michael). Thanks for the link.

Well according to the article the Skins came up to 16M but KC wants 20M annually. that is a huge ask for KC right now. Im sure if KC came down to 17 or 18 a long term deal would have been done to help out our cap this year. Looks like KC is going to bet on himself this year and play on the tag. If he repeats his 2015 season then his ask is going to be 22-23 mil. KC is rolling the dice on his career. High risk for high reward here.

Im sure KC and his agent were waiting for some additional data points before seriously negotiating a long term deal. Bradford's contract gives them one. There will be a few others that will also help such as Fitzpatrick and Osweiller. Once they have these, they can narrow down what they really want. There is no way KC is getting a long term deal with an average of $20M/year. $17-18M is in the ball park, with 35-45% guaranteed over the life of the deal. It was smart for them to wait. Let the market be set by these guys and then demand a bit more. My guess is they will execute on a long term deal in early summer once all the other deals are done.

It makes little sense for KC to play under a 1 year deal. There is just too many risks out there. He is in for a very large payday over many years if he plays this right. IF he stays under the tag this year, he risks injury, poor play, other key player injuries (Reed, Jackson) that could make for a down year. He and his agent know this so a deal will get done.

jy19 if he knew this then why didn't he take the 16M that was offered? He would of gotten security and given the Skins more cap flexibility to make the team better. I agree 17-18 is the ball park for KC. Why didn't KC counter to 17 or 18 after SM offered 16? Doesn't make sense. I think he didn't counter b/c KC is going to bet on himself and really break the bank next year if he plays well. Yes its a huge risk but he is looking at it like well I have 20M right now so let me take a shot.

It makes perfect sense. He didn't yet have the data points he needed. He now has Bradford's. He will get a few more. It is just smart move to wait. What is the rush for him? The team can make the moves they need to to free up cap space (bye RG3) for other players.

But SM is not going to give KC 20M annually on a long term deal this year no matter what happens in FA. So I believe KC is betting on himself and wanted the franchise tag.

Who said he would SM would? KC and his agent put that $20M number out there because they wanted the tag to buy them time. There is no way KC expects that number. Truthfully, the dollar amount makes little difference. Its the guaranteed amount that matters. Rarely do these contracts go to maturity. As they become to expensive in their latter years, they are either renegotiated and extended or the player is released. This is what will happen with Bradford in 2017. If he has a good year in 2016, they will renegotiate and extend or they will get rid of him, making him a one year rental at a very expensive price. They are obviously betting that he will play well enough to be their QB for the next 3-5 years.

Then if he doesn't expect that number why not sign long term for 17? Im sure Sm would have come up 1m to get KC long term. Of course it still can happen. But I think KC is going to bet on himself this year.

Well clearly SM didn't come up to $17. The offer you said he should sign for never came. Also, what if the market went wild and $20M became the market reality? Guys like Bradford and taylor and Osweiller got contracts worth more than $17M? KC's agent would look like a fool. Again, there is no rush. Let the market be determined and then slot yourself accordingly.

Just once I would love to see somebody other than Brady put the team first. I hate Brady but love that he plays for 9 mil/season.

He dint come up to 17 b/c there was no counter offer from KC. KC wanted the tag. KC wants to have a shot to break the bank next year with a long term deal.

How do you know this? And why does SM need a counter offer to increase his bid?

NO its been reported SM went to 16 from 15. KC never counter offered the 16M. He wanted the franchise tag.

What did I say in my first post on this subject??? KC wanted the tag to buy time to let others set the 2016 market price. It makes perfect sense and is a smart move.

I continue to be surprised by the allure of the AAV. That is, at best, a crabbed way of assessing a deal's worth. What you really want is lots of guaranteed cash and a contract without an early exit ramp.

Brady has a wife who's salary makes his look like chump change even if he didn't give a break. It is great that he does that but you can't discount the wife's earning ability.

Who cares? When you have a limited amount of space to work with in a game and you are quibbling over a million dollars when you rake in at least 17 mil...I have a problem with that. Now, if somebody offers him 20 and we are down at 15...yeah, then you move on.
