Just from an outside point of view, how would you grade the performance yesterday? (1 to 10) 1= bad 10 = exceptional

Offense

Defense?

Special Teams?

I would do grading of specific players, but I am not sure that this would be relevant in week one!

My thoughts presently until I see replay:

Off: 5
Def: 4
S.T: 5

Pretty basic average play from my point of view!

Def. 4

Offensively I expected much better blocking, we had the superior athletes, our line and receivers should have just been locking up the blocks. Not impressed at all with Martinez' short throwing game.... Cody Green looks much improved over last year.
Offensive Player of the game.... Toss UP between Martinez and Green

Defense: Not good enough, period. Not enough penetration from the front four.... David played pretty well for his first game, but the LB unit needs to step up... Not enough lock down on recievers......... WKU had way to many yards....... Basically I didn't expect WKU to cross the 50... and in reality they prob should have had atleast 17 points...

Special teams: wasn't impressed with punt or kickoff coverage......

I agree with the OP.

Off: 5
Def: 4
S.T: 5

This wasn't a Top 10 effort but neither were some other Top 10 teams..
Niles Paul is a hot dog. Not the dominant player I expected him to be. As a positive, I thought he blocked well downfield though.
Is #6 Marlowe slow, or does he just look slow? He just looked odd returning kicks. However, he seemed to have decent field vision.
Games are won in the trenches. There were positives and negatives. The negatives appeared to be effort related. When the score got comfortable both lines seemed to go flat. A positive I noted on the defense were assignement related. They stayed at home for the most part.
Is Eric Martin hurt? I don't recall seeing him play.
Martinez is a dimension that can make a difference in close games. He reads well and isn't waiting for others to make plays. Bo had a huge smile on his face after the first Martinez TD run in the 1st Q. You don't see that often. It's a leadership trait where teammates gain confidence knowing they can count on you. It's a dimension NU didn't have with Lee under center and will deal defensive coordinators fits having to assign a player to him.
For a first game, overall NU played well 'when focused'. A lot of backups got some valuable experience. This week I expect both sides of the ball will be paying the price for losing concentration on occasion

Eric Martin was out on every special teams play and played when they put in the 2's.

I noticed on one of the first plays he was in on defense, he could have put a good hit on the RB, but missed the tackle.

I really wasn't looking for him..It was just an after-thought that I didn't recall him making any plays..

I'll give the team and overall 4.5 Offense has holes to fix and so does the defense. This team has a lot of potential more than it's had in a real long time I'm gonna say since 1999.

I'm gonna rep that.

They need to stay focused. As a group they seemed to lose concentration when comfortable. That is fixable..
Athletically and physically the skill positions have more potential than I've seen in a long time.
As a whole my biggest criticism goes to the defensive line play. Yet with the loss of Suh, maybe I was paying too much attention to it. Not much pressure on the QB and the LB's made a lot of tackles after 2-3 yd gains.
This could also be the LB's not getting up there for run support though. Assignment shit..I don't know..

I don't know how you really grade the offense after yesterday because 100 different players touched the football.

We had third stringers gettin playing time at the start of the second quarter..........I almost didn't even know Helu was on the team anymore, but with that said him and Burkhead both got 5 rushing plays. Burkhead was featured a bit more with those passes over the middle.

It was pretty obvious the coaching staff was focused on getting youth on the field and preserving the health of the starters. I am fine with what we did offensively and I think we'll only grow there.

Defensively I felt like the DBs did a great job, as you would expect. Can they do better? Yea, we saw them do better last year. The Linebackers weren't great, they weren't horrible, but I don't think they were good either......about like I expected.....much room to grow.

The DLine has me worried because I didn't see any WKU offensive linemen getting beat........and I realized pretty quick that we are missing a guy named Ndamukong Suh who used to just put his hands on a guy's pads and throw him to the ground......didn't see anyone do that last night. And that DLine last year used to completely plug running holes.......way too many holes last night for the 118th ranked team in the nation. 179 yards on the ground is a concern.

Special teams.........eh, are you kiddin me? We're golden on special teams......they will be solid all year long.

Offense - 7
Defense - 5 (Bo and Carl will be workin their magic before we head out to Washington)
Special Teams - 9 (the only reason I'm not sayin 10 is because Henery didn't get to kick any field goals ;))

TO BE FAIR...........

Western Kentucky was ranked #37 in rush offense last year...............
2009 Western Ky. Football Ranking Summary

Yes... I'm a stat geek- and I realize that sometimes stats don't project into reality, but to say that we gave up x-amount yards rushing to the 118th team, is completely inaccurate........ They averaged 172 yrd/game last year, we let them get 7 above their average and we played damn near everyone who had a helmet.........

And as far as special teams go........'

I personally thought our punt and kickoff coverage is a concern............

But to be fair HH, the reason they averaged 172 yards on the ground last year is because it was the only thing they could do without turning the ball over.........so they'd hand it off 50 times a game and average 3.2 yards a play
